Fert spreader depreciation, price to swap.

I know we all love a good “which spreader” thread but I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are on an acceptable price would be to swap?
Ignoring brand I’ve had a price to trade my 2017 fert spreader for a new 2020 machine but much a bigger model. I know it’s not like for like swap but the deprecation would work out at approximately £1.60 an acre.
Does that sound like a decent deal? Obviously if it was a like for like machine it would bring that down closer to £1 an acre.

Same spec? Not much cost to make a hopper bigger, can be huge range in price on spec pto vs hydraulic, vari width, vari rate,

As above similar machine but a lot bigger, going from a 3 bag 28m machine to a 5/6 bag 45m machine. Both section control, vr, auto on/off etc so hence the price jump. I’m keeping my control box etc.

Is that per acre that you farm or per acre the machine has covered ie 3x your acreage

I was working on acreage spread, but there’s a good chunks of contracting as well, my heads hurting now 🤦‍♂️😂.
So would I work it out on total acreage spread or just acreage?

I’m not sure but I have just been working my own out since your op as I’ve been having quotes for new spreaders and they seem dear on our relative small acreage. To replace a 10 year old Amazone for similar machine but with a weigh cell it would be 45p an acre of acres covered by spreader only applying nitrogen as we dont use bagged p&k

Perhaps I’m just trying to justify the figures to change it and feel like I’m getting a good deal 😂 it sounds a lot when I say it out loud 🤔

Changed ours at 11yr old. Was getting worn out and less accurate, went from manual shut off no electrics to auto speed sensor, sensors on discs to control flow accuracy and vari rate but no vari width. Part ex was about 1/3 of new value, i justified it as the value of spreader was spread in a few weeks of fert so wanted it fairly accurate

It’s surprising how easy it is to justify expenditure when you’ve already made your mind up.👍

Mrs NeilO has now learnt to just roll her eyes when I come with similar reasons for purchases.🤐

Ok, so I’ll thrown some more detailed figures in because I’m just confusing myself trying to work it out 🤦‍♂️.

Old spreader has done approx 6000 acres over 3.5 years, so roughly 1714 ac a year. Dealer offering £6500 trade in on just the spreader, if I remember right the spreader on its own (without screen/gps unlocks etc) was £11k so lost 4.5k or £1286 a year or 75p ac spread in depreciation.

Price to swap is 9.5k but will have around 2800 acres to spread this year, so will cost roughly £1.13 ac over 3 years.

thoughts?
