Why is MOP / TSP so popular still when there are far cheaper (and arguably better) ways to get p and k ?

Never really understood this
Which products are cheaper? I've priced fibrophos and cropcare and they're not exactly cheap here, in actual fact it'll be more to match the same nutrient application according to soyl recs. Obviously there's other nutrients in them though which helps make it worthwhile.

Kalfos or P-grow P and Fibrophos K much cheaper here and a lot more available / influential on indices IME so far plus they contain more than the P and K as a bonus

I'm comparing product prices though, if you are comparing a delivered and contractor spred price with a product only price they would look expensive

On the calculations I did earlier today Fibrophos / P-Grow works out £30/ha cheaper than TSP & MOP. I looked at product prices only so the comparison was bulk tipped versus TSP & MOP in bags.
Looked at applying 00-60-60, 00-70-105 and 00-90-00

When do you apply it? There's obviously a cost to running a spreader suitable for fibrophos etc. Most farmers have a fertiliser spreader.

What dose rate do you base that on? £30/ha means nothing without that piece of info. £30 off a big dose on an index 0 for potatoes has a different meaning to that for a straw chopped 8/t/ha wheat crop at index 2.

Fibrophos still was cheaper per kg of P&K applied, even after the spreading charge was applied, than bags of 0.26.26 bought in.
Downside is a big spreader over your stale seedbeds, which on a plough based system is not an insignificant thing, especially if it is wet.

Unless you have an artic load at a time, Fibropohos 0:12:12 delivered & spread by local contractor is £140/t here (probably around £125 if full artic dropped in and same contractor spread at 675kg/ha). With 0:24:24 delivered at £280, there's not a lot in it here apart from your own spreading cost and the question of availability.

Any evidence of the availability of the P in Kalfos yet?:scratchhead: It didn't seem to do much to indices here, so I didn't use it again.

Plenty of evidence of the immobility of p in the soil to remind us not to spread 100kg of TSP onto ten thousand tons of soil and expect it to do any more than the thin end of f all. Ton of 0-12-12 going on per ha next week on fallow to keep us topped up for next three years.

Agreed, but if you place tsp within 25mm of a seed, you can get the same effect with 50kg TSP rather than messing about watching clouds of Fibrophos dust blow over the hedge...

I was working on Fibrophos cost 2 yrs ago of £+/-90/t, long haul to you from storage I expect.

We apply rotationally ahead of spring crops

Same 15 yr old belt Spreder we used for solid N - cheap old machine really

I am doing it the other way. Trying to, as much as possible, retire the fert spreader. I have bought a spinning disc muck spreader and hope to get all my P + K on with that, in whatever form I can find it. Backed up with liquid N through the spreader. Any money saved will be a bonus the main aim is to improve soil health.
