Whenever I've asked about ton bags they're dearer than 600's WTF🤷
When I was in warks it was all tonne bags or bulk - from immingham (I think fenwick’s were the hauliers then) down here in wales the reps don’t even know the tonne bags exist. Iirc it was 26 bags where as in 600’s you can get 48 on - 48 x .600 is 28.8t, haulier gets paid on a per tonne basis so haulier won’t haul the 26x 1000 down here.

£5 a ton more for ton bags whenever I’ve asked. To be fair tho 600’s work better for me as putting 4 in with a 150kgs left in is enough if it’s wet.

Can still picture them stacked on the roadside wall to make loading them into the spreader easier.
Remember going to work on a farm in my middle year of Walford OND , only to be horrified when an artic load of little bags arrived and had to be hand balled off. This was a modern dairy farm with up to date machinery, but no one thought to get them on pallets . At home we had pallets with our name on that presumably had to be sent back at some stage. We had a forklift on the 3 point linkage of a David Brown 1200, which you had to drive very carefully or the front end shot up .
Then an old 4 ton Weeks trailer was used, which the spinner backed up to .
no wonder my back is buggered

nothing would bugger your back quicker than carrying bags of spuds up aplank and emptying them in the pile hard work for hard men good job half ton boxes came cut out all that graft

Back in the day of small bags we used to fetch it from Staffordshire farmers on a scammel bogey artic trailer, they’d load the pallets on and the trailer was high enough that the vicon 802 would just about go under the side so that it was down hill work filling the spreader, 16 bags, thought that was a fair load back then.

i remember we had a teagle 4cwt spinner my father said if you spread all day that was enough money to spend in one day

Father always filled the Teagle spinner and then carried an extra full bag on top. As he started spreading and the hopper empties he would turn around and slit the full bag with his knife to top up the load. Those were the days 🤣👍

the only good things about those days were the 10p a bag i could get for the empties!

railway sacks the wheat didnt want a good bw!before my time , but brother rams it down my througt.
Were they the bags that held 2 1/4 hundredweight?
I’ve heard the story many a times of my late uncle carrying these sacks of grain on his back from the threshing machine, across the yard and up the granary steps to empty them.
On one occasion on his return to the threshing machine they all stopped to watch him catch hold of the bag, he knew something was up but carried on, yep something was up but he dug in deep and carried on as close to normal, across the yard and up the steps, each step getting harder and and harder but determination kept him going, he made it to the top, and emptied the bag , complete with two 56llb weights inside.

Wonder how many farm workers could manage a day carrying 2 1/4 hundredweight sacks nowadays
