Fertiliser Tank Pad

Good afternoon all,

Just after some advice regarding a liquid fertiliser tank pad. I am due to receive 2 x 50m3 tanks for the spring, and currently looking to install the pad to situate the tanks on. Just wondering what depth of reinforced concrete and hardcore people have used? we are on a predominantly clay based soil type.

I put mine in last year, all the specifications for the pad and bung were in the liquid suppliers terms and conditions and they required me to self certify that it was done correctly before they would fill the tank.

We tend to use 150mm of PAV2 concrete on a base of crushed and compacted concrete to the same depth. Its a bit OTT for squat and lighter 30000 litre Enduramaxx tanks but i believe essential for a 50 cube vertical tank with a taller structure and heavier footprint and cabled down at the base. Obviously suppliers requirements will vary from make to make,dont skimp if in doubt.

I’d be making it big enough so you can sit a block-work bund around the edge should it become legal requirement in the future.

Agreed measured to incorporate future bund, as like you say can see it becoming mandatory soon enough. Cheers

We’ve just installed tanks. Think we put 7inch of concrete on a solid rock base. There’s a huge amount of weight in once place.
We had to have a bund before they’d even deliver the tanks.

Same here, new tant,
no bung = no delivery.
Can't blame them really.

I last had some Yara tanks installed in 2019. No bund required then but I left room for one to be added. I'm not aware of any legal requirement under SAFFO for a bund, but do be aware of the clean up costs for 50,000 litres of spilt fertiliser! If I were doing any more (and this year's fertiliser price increases are a good reason), I'd be factoring in a bund for the design.

The recommended bund capacity is 110% of the biggest tank but this needs to be bigger (130% IIRC) in certain environmentally sensitive areas.

I think our bund cost us about £900 maybe even a bit less. We’ll worth it really.
