Fibre to premises

We have contracted BT to get Broadband fibre and it looks as though we are going to get an FTTP service (fibre to the premises). If they are running a separate fibre line in to the premises (@ approx £48/month) will I have to continue to pay for a phone line as well as I will be able to run phones over voip and port over my current phone number/s?

@J B They only need to run it about 50 ft from the telegraph pole and the little green plastic box! It will cost me less than £50/month for business broadband no connection cost.

Dont hold your breath regarding connection. We have had fiber optic cables up outside our farmyard since April 2016, and still no connection. Even BT cannot connect us up to FTTP:(

First phase connection completed, final connection booked for 19th December. Surely no further delays other than weather related! What I really want to know now is whether I can cancel my line rentals (x2)??

The only issue with FTTP and cancelling your copper connection is in the event of a power cut at the house, you will have no internet and no phone. (fine if your mobile has good signal)

But if I have a power cut I don't have Internet anyway as we operate over wifi! BT have confirmed at last that there will be no additional line rental!

What he means is when you have a power cut your phone still works on the copper line. If you cancel the old line and rely on fibre only you will have no phone (except mobile) when you have a power cut. If you can live with that, fine. Only really matters if you have a power cut and an emergency at the same time.

Only if you have a line powered handset wired into the socket....

If you have redundant power ( genset) you should be fine, what voip solution are you going for?

@HDAV - I have not decided yet, it will probably be cloud based, currently have similar priced options for three extensions and porting two numbers using "BT cloud" or Rydal Communications or Voipfone. Open to all suggestions!

Are the Openreach cabs kept lit (by UPS or batts) in a blackout? If so you can stick a £50 APC ups on your fibre router to maintain premises to exchange comms in the event of a blackout

All our internet and VoIP goes out via EE mobile broadband (4G). Just chuck a ups on the router and presto you have internet, WiFi and VOIP during a blackout, as mobile masts are in themselves backed up via ups.

In an extended blackout get a backup set running.

@Pheasant Surprise - what voip system d you use?
And what does UPS stand for?
My VoIP service provider is sipgate. Been using them since 2012. I get on very well with them and only pay for outbound calls as and when I need them, so very cost effective. Free number/line rental effectively.

A UPS is an uninterruptible power supply - battery powered unit that keeps whatever you plug into it ticking over (for a finite time) until the power comes back on. Like this...

Sooooo excited, just had this email.regarding FTTP
I can confirm that your property is part of the fibre roll out in the area and is expected to be live by December 2018, if not before.

Heard it all before, still intend renew EE 4G for another 12 months as soon as I spot a decent deal for 100gb / month

Still excluded from fibre here despite poles and fibre being installed only 800m away and told by BT who wrote back to my MP to tell me to check my router is working properly for my existing 750 kps connection! No mobile signal here and two neighbours trying to run businesses. We are only 8 miles from Carmarthen not half way up a mountain. The Welsh government has spent millions with no transparency or information for residents. You can see me amongst others on S4C News Newyddion at 9.00 pm on Monday 18th December being interviewed about the issue.

The current programme finishes in Wales at the end of the month and they are meant to be announcing next year what is going to happen to the remainder. As we had a promise previously from Edwina Hart that we would have fibre by 2016 I'm not sure how we are meant to believe them.

Fantastic. With the right VOIP provider you can do all kinds of cool stuff, like host a dozen phone conversations into your premises at once if needs be. Or you can get an on-site mobile type thing that means you can answer the landline whilst you are out in the yard.

You and your neighbours need to club together and offer to do the job to make it easy for them to put the fibre in to your doors.

All this ability to switch contracts once it is installed obviously means that they are hardly going to be that keen to do anything for 3 customers.
