Field marshal

having read all the previous, I feel I need to correct some parts, and issue a serious warning.
First, Marshals are not total loss oiling systems, there is a return line from the crankcase to the oil tank, which allows oil to be blown back to the tank by the transfer pressure in the crankcase, there is a valve at the crankcase end, and this can stick.
Now the warning. if this valve sticks oil will build up in the crankcase, and eventually cause a runaway, and that is an education, and one so terrifying, its not forgotten! How do I know this? Simple, our marshal did this, and the forces involved caused the piston to collide with the vaporised in the head, which bit distorted I dont know, as all was fine with a new vaporiser and big end. There was no visible damage to the big end, but we fitted one as a precaution.
For cartridge starting, the oil pump is turned a few turns, the flywheel is turned until two arrows line up, and the decompresser is placed in the first turn of the thread, the valve on the decompresser/power start valve on the the head is placed in the power position. the Firing pin, in the breach is checked for free movement, if stuck, it can lead to premature firing of the cartridge, If all is well, a cartridge is inserted, the breach cap screwed down, throttle set to at around half way. Firing pin is then struck, charge enters the cylinder through the decompresser valve, the engine turns over, the decompresser drops of the flywheel, restoring compression, and the engine starts. Breach cap is removed, the decompressed valve wire tweaked, and the spent cartridge is ejected.
Hand stating is less complicated.Decompresser wheel is placed in last (the one farthest from the block). Oil pump is turned, throttle set, starting paper holder is removed, paper fitted and lit, holder and paper refitted crank handle inserted and turned as hard as poss, half hearted measures here can cause the engine to bounce off compression, and run reverse, which it will happily do! They can also reverse if left idling too slowly, its confusing moving off backwards in forward gear!

We always refer to them as Pom Poms. Might just be my old fella though.

On the farm we own now they built a new silage pit, guessing about the mid Sixties.
Farmer filled it up and then rolled with the old Field Marshal, for some reason he left her sitting on top of the pit running for a bit and the vibration settled the silage too much and pushed one of the walls out.
Silage everywhere, whole wall had to be rebuilt. As far as I know the tractor was still sitting running on top after the event.
