Field names

How many of us have fields with interesting stories behind their names?

We have 'Signpost Field', so called because there is a stone signpost type thing that has been in the hedge for as long as I can remember, from when the village road used to go through the field.

We also have 'Ladies Corner', I am not sure about this one!

'Pylon field' has a pylon in it

The others don't really have names.

Do all your fields have names?

Stark Naked Field - no, I don't know why, either..

Lots of Egypt Meadows around here, 'cos of the Napoleonic War. We have Stony Field (but it's not very stony), Upper Charlie and Lower Charlie (but we don't know who 'Charlie' was), Foggy Meadow and Football Field (where, if anyone reading this is from Pembrokeshire, the young and sprightly Mr Trevor Nicholas of Martletwy Show and YFC fame played, err, football as a lad).

Every field has a name, most are straightforward, all are inherited.

Got one called ash potts cos its where they used to smelt the iron out of the rock in there so there would be lots of piles of ash in there, black hills cos of the peaty soils, poverty meadow and poverty pasture cos they are just sh1t  tatie garden cos they grew spuds there, pipe tracks cos of the therlmere aquaduct that runs under it. And yes, all fields have a name of sorts, no matter how boring it is!

Yes but all are in Welsh, most have a name that you can work out
Roughly translated:
Field behind house/ shed
Slope by the house
Night field
Quarry slope
Field by the yard
Slope by the cwm
New field
Small slope, etc

@IANTO may be along shortly to explain that there are loads of Maes y Gwaed (Field of Blood) around the Principality, arising from long-past battles. Variations, too, referring to soldiers and battles.

Most of our field names are 200+ years old, only a few have changed due to fields being amalgamated.

My dad has a field called "Dans knob":) far better than unamaginately named fields like my father in-law has like "side of drive" and "opposite tin barn field"

Have a field called "Peacecarr" supposed to be where they made peace after the battle of Billington.
