Son has this Oatly oat drink instead of milk as it gives him the squits!!! It’s promoting the carbon footprint of it now. I don’t think it’s carbon footprint would look so good if it compared it by nutritional content.
lovely job, a new and growing market for oats farmers. Gives consumers more choice, healthy option for many who can't process lactose. All round good news.

Most meat products don't have to be unhealthy at all. If they are, it's simply down to that fact people are loathed to pay for quality. We always make own sausages usually once a year and the only additional ingredients are breadcrumbs and some spices.

I'm not saying most meat products are unhealthy, far from it. I'm very much a proponent of eating meat as part of a healthy balanced diet.

Processed foods such as sausages, bacon, many types of burgers and things like pre-packaged hams etc aren't very healthy at all. They tend to be laced with all sorts of artificial preservatives and other nasties to make them more commercially viable. The trouble is that things like sausages and bacon are so bloody tasty!

I appreciate that it's possible to make one's own sausages or cure bacon, but that's not really practical for 99.9% of the population who source the majority of their groceries from supermarkets or the high street.

The problem is, what is a processed food?

All food is processed to degree. The 'processed' food criticism is simply pandering to peoples ignorance and fear of the unknown.

I'm quite sure there isn't the slightest thing harmful in the vegan sausage compared to the meat one.

I agree but we have to understand and use the same tactics as are used against us

Who’s in the war @Clive? As I see it, the population gets fed whichever way. If they eat veggie sausages then the soya, tomato, sugar, rapeseed, wheat and onion farmers benefit. If they eat meat, the pig farmers do. Are you really telling us that all us farmers should side with the latter and compromise the former?

Sausages are grand if bought from a craft butcher or suchlike, the thing to remember is that anything in a supermarket is made to a price.

Trouble is what used to be standard fayre is now becoming craft/artisan.

Many (not all!) butchers, bakers, etc. often have to price themselves as premium/artisan to create a point of difference from the supermarkets, and a higher price tag to justify their costs. Whereas a few decades back all butchers were a good value option, none had overly fancy ideas for inflated prices.

There are exceptions however....and those are fully worth supporting!

No it's not.

It's a educational opportunity.

Why does it have to be so divisive?! We are all farmers whether we are producing red meat, veg or potato starch.

I'm pretty laid back about the whole healthy/unhealthy thing with regards human health. Each to their own, we all have to die of something.

The bit I will not accept, and which UK ag needs to fight full on, is the suggestion that vegan food - especially processed vegan food ie multi ingredients - is better for the planet.

Never a truer word said . We are born to die as my late father used to say when anyone tried to tell him to quit smoking. He lived well ate meat at least twice a day real M EAT from a butchers with pig carcases hanging inside the door . The sausages that butcher sold would qualify for the tweet . Farmers didnt invent or push cheap watery bacon or plastic waste meat sausages on to an unsuspecting public Goverment "cheap food " policies did that and supermarkets pushing for lower prices from suppliers . Horse meat burgers etc .
Clive is correct we must hit back and as the modern consumer has the intelligence and attention span of a goldfish when it comes to food we shouldnt get to hung up about the small stuff .
If we spend our time arguing as to what constitues a sausage instead of fighting our corner fair or foul against the vegan lies and claptrap then what does that say about our priorities ? Way to go CLIVE !!!

Because our opponents are divisive and it’s working well for them - currently they run rings around ag PR and those that represent us

No one wants to be “educated’. The interest is in whatever the fashionable headline is this week

An educational opportunity? FFS man, we're letting the anti farming urban journalists pee all over the industry, without any reply or recourse to give our point of view. Monbiot, Packham etc have the publics ear, and they're filling it full of everything from half truths through to fabricated bulls**t. There throwing as much mud as they can at farming, in the hope that some of it sticks.

NO!

Having watched and followed the great push for both autonomous and electric vehicles one major factor that has led to its collapse is the hype, spin and outright lies put out by those backing it. The goons of the movement got to believe their own BS and eventually came to look faintly ludicrous. It would be a great setback to the farmers cause if we were to lose our integrity through the adoption of alarmist and immediately disprovable sloganeering.

It's a bit hysterical if you ask me, 2% or thereabouts are vegan. Of those, less will be militant (I've had plenty of friends who are vegan over the years).
My other half is a vegan, who fails to see anything hypocritical about going out with someone who essentially is the meat industry, having been part of it (sheep, pigs, broilers) and now promoting it. She just doesn't feel comfortable killing animals for food, and as someone who has killed animals for food (and to euthanase them) I sympathise with that position, death is never nice.

Interestingly, apparently I've made less fuss about her dietary choices than anyone else she's dated.

I'm not wholly invested in agriculture - it's actually a very small aspect to my overall family business - less than 5% at last accounting period. Ironically, my agri customer base actually goes up with bad farming press stories, as most of our produce is direct sales and customers avoid the mass suppliers in favour of those they can visit, but I still want the best for the industry as a whole.

Ideology in the fact you have an axe to grind in favour of vegetarians .. for some reason you are not willing to allow others to debate the facts.

Unless you're meaning 'plastic' to be the opposite of elastic, rheologically, then you couldn't be more wrong. If you are, then the same could be said about whipped cream and a host of other foodstuffs and your statement should be considered highly disingenuous. The products we now know as margarine are far removed from the original oleomargarine derived from beef tallow and most (all?) now come from vegetable oils. Plastics such as polyethylene are derived mostly from fossil fuels. I'm pretty certain that no butter substitute that is made from fossil fuel oils, aside from that put into the tractors and harvesters etc.

Margarine is created by using high pressure and heat.

Heat & pressure treated oil to change the polymer chain .. plastic as in the chemical chain is similar to that found in some plastics. Margarine also fails to degrade in the environment as fast as whole foods such as butter .. which obviously gives concerns to how margarine is or even can be wholely digested.

Trans fatty acids which are linked to cancer, heart disease and chronic health conditions.

To be honest, this all feels a bit like the 'dihydrogen monoxide aka DHMO aka H2O aka water' thing - make it sound scary as a way of conning the impressionable, and then not mention the similar constituents in the stuff we're selling. It's not how I want to do business.

Eggs, Red Meat & Butter have all been vilified in the past for decades.

5% of your business is farming .. yet you seek to influence those with 100% stakes ..

Marketing, advertising and politics is all about making impressions.
