Film crew looking for land

We have been approached by a small film producer wishing to use part of a field (approx. 5 acres) and expect to use it for 2 full days. Water and electric is not available. They would be responsible for reinstating any damage to land / gateways etc.

They have asked what the 'location fee' will be - any ideas what they might expect to pay?

£1000 a day.

Depends on the budget for the programme really, when they filmed 'Where the Heart is' my mates house was the home of Pam Ferris, £500 a week and put up in a local hotel, used it 12 weeks for the first series, for the second series they built them a whole new kitchen including appliances and took the old one away to be rebuilt in a studio. They reduced the fee by half to be able to take outside shots of the house.

I had charge rates for all sorts when dealings with film companies. To name a few; Poirot, Goodbye Mr Chips, Red-caps, Midsomer murders & The Lost Prince directed by Stephen Poliakoff to name a few.

Rates for a grass field; We calculated the value of the hay crop per bale. 100 bales per acre to be reasonable. £3.00 per bale so £300 per acre X 5 is £1500.00. Do not settle for any less. Insist on seeing their public liability insurance and this is usually up to 10 million. Make sure that you can spend time on set to 'keep-an-eye' and you will be well fed, watered and usually have an interesting day. They work bl**dy hard with breakfast between 07.30 & 08.00.
Any others I may be able to help on I'll try to answer.
Mt Nettles insurance was quite high!
I also insisted on a 'damage deposit cheque for £1000 up front, returnable at the end of their filming.
We usually grossed £4k for each event.

Is it a Porno? In which case payment in kind may be an option?

Chucklevision, Midsomer & Poirot loved one particular property for its period fittings c1950's. The lady who lived there very rarely had to use her own money to pay the rent. Two yearly film company visits resulted in her rent money being earned in eight days!

There are many film producers working on very tight budgets, They will not be looking to pay anything near £1000 per acre.
Check them out see what sort of films they do.
If it is a case of Eastenders spending a day in the country or the latest Starwars then fair enough, but if not you may be lucky to get a couple of hundred pounds.
however if it just involves a couple of people and film crew prancing about for a few hours it is better than nothing
At this time of year and with no vehicles they are hardly going to do a lot of damage
Very likely it will be an ad.

We sold a bunch of cattle for a period drama film in 1996, It was a flop unfortunately.
But I have it on VHS and the cows look great(y) Its worth doing just to look back on it and spot things
But one should never refuse the offer of money

Ask for references from where they've been in the past…and quizz the owners of said locations. I agree, it will probably not be as much as you think as there will always be someone who will do it for less.

We had em filming
There's only one Jimmy Grimble.
(One of Robert Carlisle's lesser known roles)
They wanted cattle moved out of shot for two days.
Asked em a grand for the privilege , got nowhere.
Second day we had our tb test
Soon on radio to security
Could we turn the jcb off?
We had a very leisurely lunch at the catering van
They don't half eat well on location .

Had the BBC about 15 years ago for 2 full days of filming for Diezel and Pascoe. Took over the whole farm yard, about 15 to 20 vehicles including 5 lorries. Very disruptive, could not start evening milking until they finished filming which was about 6 pm but they could have gone as late as 8 pm. We got £1000 a day. As others have said got very well fed and it was interesting but novelty would soon wear off.

We used to have a film crew in for some episodes of Cowbois ac Injans(Cowboys and Engines) which was a Welsh language television drama. They used to film round the yard, on the lane just outside the farm and in the village plus they used to use our place for the catering van and vehicle parking. We've also had a few entertainment / documentary bits of filming here also. Interesting because it's a bit different from the norm and the longest we've had them here is for three days in a row so it's not been much of an inconvenience.

The best part is most deffo the catering van though .... Mmmmm.... yum ... yum ... yum

Had a couple of days here filming for a welsh language version of The Bill many years ago(a convoy of travellers turn up in a field&the police get involved was the main thrust of our bit)..Had an interesting day,was well fed and got £1000 for my trouble and the most enduring thing is the 2 loads of stone which firmed up the gateway to the field...Although I did have bulling cows 3wks later...the AI man of the day saw all the actors dressed as police & decided I'd killed somebody and thought it better not to turn into the yard and get involved...

We've had the Indian doctor series film a few times on our place similar situation regards to milking needed fitting in around them not sure on exact numbers but I know it paid well they used the farm house so was paid for them dressing the house plus filming and putting everything back used a few sheds too! And we've had casualty film on our road too think you have more pull money wise if its buildings they want to use rather than a bit of field
