Financial value of FYM

£35 an hour. Is that a man, tractor and spreader? Diesel? How can they possibly make a margin at that? In my part of the world contractors charge a lot more than that.

I'm very seldom concerned how others make a margin so long as the price is right and they do a good job. Might be because you are closeby / decent block of land / timed to fit in with their slack time / soil type that will spread when others won't.

I used to straw for dung . They baled and cleared , we carted back and spread dung.

Just wasn't worth it imo when I can put the chopper on . Not dung but gives it a little OM each year rather than removing it and only seeing a dung spreader occasionally. Haulage and spreading dung just gets too dear for me

I do the same with local dairy farmer, they bale and cart and I haul muck back and spread, use a contractor to spread I load spreaders, works well for me and think there are unseen longer term benefits from muck, my soils are quite hungry so always see better crops after muck and can cut back on bagged fert a bit.
also have green waste composting site not far away so get that too for free so far if we haul, in both cases we can normally average about a load an hour on a 14 ton trailer so 2 tractor/trailers running you can shift a fair bit in a few days and generally we can fit it in to suit our work load.
Put some compost on after OSR last autumn probably at about 30 t/ha and the soil just looks lovely and wheat looks great, worm casts everywhere.

Don’t underestimate the cost of applying FYM/compost etc.

A pile in each field will cost £1.50/t loaded and spread so 10,000 tonnes is a £15,000 bill. Then you’ve got haulage from where it comes from to the field piles to add on top. It’s not a cheap option compared to bagged stuff.

It’s difficult to equate and there are many different ways of looking at it and it’s one of those things where you can make the numbers add up to what you want or not depending on how you view it.
How long do you get value from fym for, more than one year?
How do you cost an improvement in organic matter levels.
I know my soil/crops looks better after fym, compost, bio solids etc.

Rolling grass this evening. You can see where we went round a wet patch with the pig slurry

Well we budget £2/t all in that’s includes pushing up loading and spreading and
35/hr for spreader contractor
25/hr for jcb 3cx 1987 though own it but include the bucket and grab costs but these do add up
10p/t for toe tip bucket cost 1000 3 years ago used for pushing up to keep ground clear for the lorry’s
20p/t for dung grab
it all tipped for free though

then their is the odd lorry of stone Every year as the spreader is hard on lanes that is not included but does add up
But it is far better than the bag long term so I will stick with it and when you dig a hole you will find loads more roots in the fym that you ploughed down

Not worth going round our fields with a roller at the mo.... it's just bouncing over the lumps as it's so hard. Really need a good roll though as the cows made a fair mess in the autumn. You've had some rain I take it?
Did mine about two weeks ago or more , if we had not rolled when we did would be waste of time now land like Concrete now , desperate for a wet day .

There’s a bit of mystery when it comes to muck, but as you can see from @silverfox pictures there is definitely a benefit from it that lasts over several years.
Difficult year to make comparisons as it’s depended on how wet the field has been .
My best at the moment is Costello drilled after maize on a dry field . Only had some manganese up to now. No herbicide or fungicide yet .View attachment 870946View attachment 870947

Cracking field of wheat by the way. Haven’t seen one that decent this year. If only it was as easy as just doing the nutrient value in one year.

Thanks . Just walking a field of W barley ( Orwell , that had a good mucking before drilling. Too wet for an autumn herbicide so a bit dirty, but will need a growth reg soon
