Finished Jersey steers- value?

On another thread in the Dairy section there is a discussion about the value of NZ cross and extreme dairy type males for finishing. I put up figures for two Jersey steers which I have recently had back from slaughter to process myself. The question has been asked , what would an abattoir pay for such animals?, so I'm asking that question here to see if any values are forthcoming. Kill date 6th Feb 2018
Born 9/10 June 2016, 220.8+230.kg dwt
both P3 steers.

P3 and 220-230kgs would be paid on a realisation basis so god only knows, however little they thought they could get away with. However if you work on cow price you probably wouldn’t be far off. 80-100p off the over 36month r4l price. £350 or thereabouts??

According to st merryn grid at that weight P- are £1.80 below base price and P+ are £1.40 below. They would probably not kill out as heavy either if trimmed to supermarket spec so could easily be below £400.

According to st merryn grid at that weight P- are £1.80 below base price and P+ are £1.40 below. They would probably not kill out as heavy either if trimmed to supermarket spec so could easily be below £400.

Where can i find a copy of St Merryn grid? we have just sent some emptys and come back next to nothing!

I put the figures up here to get professional finisher's opinions but mainly to counter the slating that farmers who euthanase bull calves, soon after birth, are getting on the other thread:(.

Despite the fact that once that jersey bull calf hits the ground pretty much the only option is to slaughter it for pet food it’s not really defensible is it. I totally understand the dilemma and someone I know has started crossing out his jerseys for exactly that reason. Sexed semen and a Belgian blue stockbull has to be the only morally acceptable solution to the problem??

Is not pet food an acceptable option?
I know how much tins of quality food are and when you see how many dogs and cats there are kept as pets this must be a huge commercial market. Pet food has to be produced to virtually the same standards as food for human consumption!!

The value of the pet food market must be £ billions and I often wonder whether there would be more profit in putting old ewes straight into it.
