I read earlier that you can finish store lambs inside on a ration of 3.5kg of maize and 200g of brewers grains. Anyone else done/doing this? Any advice appreciated.

I have never heard of this but 3.5 kg of maize is an awful lot and I would have thought they would not take to it very well.

All I can think is it would be a bit potent? Potential for a bit of acidosis? Got too be worth a try with a batch, wouldn’t it be a touch shy on CP though?

thats a tiny amount of BG to maize. Without working it out I would have thought 3 kg of Maize to 2 of BG would be more balanced. If thoroughly mixed it would stop the lambs being selective with the maize.

Brewers grains is high in protein and low in energy. I’ve fattened lambs on grainbeet in the past. 3:1 4:1 5:1 I would recommend 3:1 or 4:1 though. Cheaper than most other things but they tend to turn some of it to clart. Takes time too. I couldn’t cope with the lower throughput of sheep

a lot is depending on the quality of your maize silage but can do 1kg of brewers and 2.5 kg of maize silage. You wont risk acidosis with the brewer in there, there is plenty of fibre and yeast to keep the rumen healthy and long fibre from the silage. they wont fatten quick but on current feed prices so much cheaper than anything else. with only 200g you are very low on protein.

I think so. My biggest gripe with it was the amount of straw we used per sheep due to the time they were in. Smaller amount of brewers grain with barley added would sound a plan.

I believe old toothless ewes fatten like buggery on it…
Hmm, Barley will add a big risk of acidosis, quute likely make them dirtier and still not be enough protein , just adding fat more than muscle.

Sounds like an ideal ration in a slatted floor fattening shed. Save the slats getting bunged up?

There’s bugger all here. The drought only broke here as the temperature started falling.
