Boss was on a course then other day about how to deal with a major trauma situation before air ambulance arrives (run by ex air ambulance doctor) and his sister who is a nurse, haven’t heard all details yet as I’m on holiday this week but she said that she’d ordered some new first aid kits for tractors, thing is too small there’s nothing in them and too big there’s no where to keep it safe in cab do have some atm that just need updated, also have defibrillator on site that was supplied by local charity, must remember to check it next week when I’m back for battery and out of date bits

as above a box of plasters aint alot of use (other than the boss salving his concience or ticking yet another bledy box when it boils down to it, a course is what is best , with how to use difribulators do a tourniquet etc

Just to make your day; my recent RT inspector gave me a non-compliance because my first aid kit didn't have a "best before " date.
That is just beyond stupidity. What harm can a 5 year old sealed bandage do anyone? A date is just an easy target for any inspector.
Meanwhile at the start of Covid the masks which expired in 2016 were relabelled with a felt pen to 2020 and used - quite rightly.

There is no point in having fancy first aid kits for major trauma at work unless you are getting trained as a paramedic. The clue is in the name-First Aid-before help arrives. If someone has torn an artery you won't have time to find the kit.
It is about assessing what has happened, preventing further injury and applying immediate care which may involve a bucket of water over a burn or chemical eye splash or rolling up your shirt and pressing as hard as you can on a wound.
The kit is for a plaster for a grazed knee.

Was thinking that myself, if out of date stuff is good enough to send to Ukraine why not use it yourself

The best before date on things like dressings is because the seal on the packaging or the anti microbial properties may be compromised after a certain time - so you could be applying a non sterile dressing a wound. In terms of those being sent to the Ukraine it's a case of something better than nothing, whereas in the UK it is not difficult to maintain an up to date first aid kit.

Sometimes it's hard to get your head around the sterility of the area you're treating in a lot of incidents on farms and the like. All you are doing is doing your best at the time.
Yes I know where you're coming from, prior preparation prevents......... but accidents happen and not when they're expected or convenient, you just deal with them with what you've got there and then.

Just done a first aid course and a section on forestry for more serious trauma with the right first aid kit to hand not a Mickey Mouse one you get free in a car you’d have every thing you’d need to potentially save a life while waiting for help

To be fair sterility of a dressing is irrelevant if you're dealing with a major bleed etc
