Seriously, something as modern and airbag stuffed as is possible would be the best, whatever make that is, little point in buying something chronically slow and lethargic with the idea of preventing accidents as that doesn’t really work.

Not saying this is her future car but my. Ain’t it nice.

Bit of a tenuous link to the machinery section!

My daughter will soon start driving and will be needing a first car. Her searches on line suggest that her expectations and mine are somewhat different!

The insurance is a bigger issue than the type of car as far as I'm concerned. What cars have you found to be reasonable to insure for young drivers?

If your feeling sporty you could try mark 2 escort rally car fitted with roll cage anti lag tractive gearbox cheap vintage insurance no car testing but I suppose it is not every one cup of tea

My nephew is 17 next month. He is having my mothers Volvo C30 1.6 petrol. My Sister seems to have got what I thought was a favourable deal on the insurance. Send me PM if you want more detail.

Mad be buggered:), the man wanted a 1st car with cheap insurance.
Two of ours had a Polo, simple and economical to insure and run, and importantly not very cool.
I agree that a bit more metal round them might desirable, so ours graduated to a Golf 1.9 diesel next.

My son has a volvo c30 1.6 plenty fast enough for a first car but it's safe and cheaper insurance than my daughter's c1 Citroen. That doesn't feel safe and is like sitting in a go kart

In the same boat here as OP looking for under 1.4 to keep insurance down, trouble is Son is 6’5 and is struggling with getting his knees under the steering wheel. Tried a Toyota Yaris at the weekend and was quite impressed with how nippy it was, Seat also goes down as well as back and had more legroom than a Ford focus

My first thought was, she can buy whatever she wants with her own money and budget, then I remembered we're in 2019 so she's probably not buying her 'own' car?

Insurance is not just about how big the engine is.

Is it to do with vehicle safety, value, repair cost and also number of occupants. The Volvo C30 only has 4 seats so may work out cheaper because only 4 people could potentially be injured in it as opposed to 5.

The Aygo is a fine car but I just wouldnt sleep well picturing anyones daughter in it going along a country road in the dead of night in heavy rain. Traction control and ESP are something we all scoff at but it might save a kiddies bacon on a wet road turning a smash or overturn into just a brown trouser moment. We have all done it.

Daughter passed her test in October, she was looking at Fiat 500's and Mini's.

Found a Mini that fitted the bill and have to say its a great little car with loads of air bags and ESP etc

Sat in the Fiat and could not entertain it. No room at all.

Have to say the Mini is great fun to drive as well.
