So do all parents buy their kids first car for them?
Second hand cars seem so cheep in the UK I'd have thought, making them buy/run one themselves would be a good way to teach them about money etc.
I'm still 10 years off my eldest needing wheels, cars might not even be a thing by then:unsure::eek:

My Dad had head on with a Skoda Fabia in our Defender. LR came off worse.
Isn't the answer to all car questions - a Golf. We love em. Auto GTD a great car.
If you want a roll cage get them an Ariel Atom.

Bit of a tenuous link to the machinery section!

My daughter will soon start driving and will be needing a first car. Her searches on line suggest that her expectations and mine are somewhat different!

The insurance is a bigger issue than the type of car as far as I'm concerned. What cars have you found to be reasonable to insure for young drivers?

You really need to do your research on this one, there’s huge differences in insurance premiums according to the type of car. I have four kids ( all adults now) so have been through it. Avoid the type of car that is used by youngsters for ‘pimping their ride’. One of my sons was quoted £15,000 for a £800/ Punto and finally got it for £4000. Another went from a £1000 Peugeot 306 to a brand new Golf and his premium dropped to about 1/4. The reality is that the safer and more valuable car then generally the cheaper the insurance will be.

My first car in 2011 was a Saab 9-5 saloon, 2004 with the 2.3T engine. 220hp and 300Nm, few months later tuned ro 260hp and 390Nm. Great car, very reliable and safe. It had 370 000km on the odometer when i swapped it in. 170 000 trouble free km's for me.

For my sins I manage’ a pool of older cars between family/ extended family and although it is still ‘mine” the 9-5 Aero is now little more than the loaner whilst others are getting MOT/Repair’s.

Yes Saab were forced to raid the GM parts bin and yes a lot of stuff in them was positively ancient but the body strength is exceptional, the build quality is on a different level completely from Opel. Best seats EVER!!

250hp with a mild remap to 275 and 420Nm. It likes front tyres.

Originally red Toyota Corolla, was my granny's afore I got it.
Had heaps of room for going to college, velour seating and you could get it to drift easily with that 1300 engine.
Slowly turned pink, rusted and piroeted through a wooden rail fence after hitting black ice on a corner. Not to reassuring was the rail that went through the passenger door.
Daughter is 17 this year and she does not want my forester. Suzuki swift perhaps.

first car i drove and passed my test in was a wolsley 6/90. saw 100mph in it along the keilhill straight. first one i owned was a riley 1.5. rear suspension had been doctored so it went round the corners sideways, great fun but it succumbed to the dreaded tin worm.
