One type expire after three years, the other type do not.

The shares we given in exchange for 0.5-1p/litre off the milk cheque as capital contribution and leaving members were paid it back in full up til 2013ish, any members that left after that had to sell their ‘shares’.

Not now, when FM shares have been devalued from £1 to 10p in the £.

No I meant if you paid 13p per share now it would cost 1ppl to join so I presume capital members would have paid 7ppl to join originally ?

The new pref shares disappear after a member has been left 3 years unless they sell them. C pref shares can be held by ex members.
70,000 shares needed for a million litre producer, they could possibly be purchased for 7,000. But I don't think they're currently recruiting and if they are it'll be a fairly tight criteria

Well there is one locally, a few Freshways producers have had notice so this is an option for them . I have FM shares, enough for 3M l now! My milk goes there , I’m an ARLA producer !
