We have got a few ponds of varying sizes was wondering what peoples experiences of turning ponds into fishing are, initial thoughts would probably to have some sort of club or syndicate rent them, are there any planning issues?

would be interested in the replies as we are (well my off farm bro) is re-excavating a pound on the farm.

is there a max attitude for course fish?

the pond used to have rainbow trout in when I was a kid, stocked by a syndicate who also put ducks down for shooting.

then the pond has slowly filled in over the last 20 odd years

When my late father dug ours out we had a visit from county council asking why we had dug a bloody great hole in there field, which we hadn't it was in our field just show what the council know !. Anyway they said if we wanted to let it for fishing we would have to pay business rates on it and that would be 10k a year.
We didn't want to let and never intended on doing so it never went any further so I don't know how they arrived at that figure.

A friend has two lakes for fishing, one took a year to build and is now looking lovely. He is part of this organisation;http://www.quietsports.co.uk They may have some very sensible and sound advice to offer. Me, well I know very little about fishing except as an opportunist to catch and eat and I've not done that for many years. Last time in NZ where it is possible to live off the land/coastal edge with some local knowledge.

Just be careful with the reservoir acts they can prove expensive and the size has been reduced down to a puddle.
Surely this only effects water stored above ground level
Ie reservoirs or dammed streams
To dam a stream of course you will need an EA licence in some situations
You also need a licence to stock a fishery too

stand corrected, except, reading through suggests holes in the ground are not covered by this change. The legislation was always meant to ensure reservoirs Ie. embanked structures were safe. I don't think anything has changed

Only going off what EA advised us when we put in our surge pool. Even though was only a hole in the ground advised to keep below the limit otherwise we would be caught under reservoir act. I did query but they said it was because where at a hill top and a large reservoir could force an underground stream to erupt elsewhere therefore it would need to be monitored.

not finished writing reply so spelling mistakes in first comments now the plus sides with no predators in the lake other then otters and herons lots of small fish which will be a problem we net and sell them to other fishing lakes makes some income we also use local farmers ponds to rear on fish and pay for the use of the ponds if anybody was thinking of going this route you need to see what the local anglers are looking for and cater for there needs

I have a quarter acre pond stuffed full of fish, mostly small common carp and roach.
Wish they were worth summat as I would happily sell them. The small ones are a nuisance if trying to fish, it just feels like they should be a resource rather than a problem.
I even considered using them as goose food, not too keen on that idea though (nor were the geese o_O)
