thinking of joining a gym to help with back pain and shoulder issue, back is twisted and needs muscles built up to hold it in a straight line, physio is ok but not enough by itself being the main issue. Don't want to build a lot of muscle mass. Shoulder is similar, damaged ligaments or something , physio says its not joint right anymore
loose in join and ligament or tendends wont repair to hold it so again work on the muscles to help it.

Anyone else doing similar or will I end up building muscle more so. Thinking personal trainer for a few sessions for pointers, could do with loosing weight but the gluten free diet is doing that by itself currently.

A GOOD PT will work on what you want to work on. If they start telling you different sack `em.

after years of over eating and over drinking, I have started getting my fitness back, so at the moment I am doing 5x 5000 meter row interval training per week on a concept 2.
My intervals are as follows

1000 m 30 sec rest
750m 30 sec rest
500m 30 sec rest
250 m 30 sec rest
250 m 30 sec rest
500m 30 sec rest
750m 30 sec rest
1000m

Started 3 weeks ago and already feel better and actually feel like I miss it on one of my 2 days off. Can now do 5000 meters straight in just over 19 minutes.

Signed up to the rat race next may in Burghley park. Although I hate running except after an odd shaped ball, I reckon the rat race is more exciting,

@Clive maybe we could have a fitness section as I know there are a few on here already posting about their workout and progress.

ok new section has been created - "fitness and weightloss" I've moved a couple of threads that already exist into there (inc this one) but if there are others you would like moving pm me links to them and I will do so

Can I poke my nose in and say when at the gym lift weights and go heavy.
When you get to a certain age and I am there now muscle mass just naturally drops away ,lifting heavy helps build that muscle really burns calories for a long time and is good for bones and posture . Do a heavy leg or chest day and your heart will pump plenty for cardio.
Just saying from experience now probably in better shape than when in my 20s
IMO this also applies to woman as well as men. For anybody worried lifting weights is not going to turn you into a 'unit' or into a roided out bodybuilding or less feminine if you are a woman. Unless, of course, you want to achieve those things.

Too true . It always makes me smile when you tell people to lift weights men and women and they reply "I do not want to get big "
If it was only that easy ,I take whey powder and a little creatine and struggle to put on a couple of kilos of muscle training 5 days a week.

I agree, I went from a 20 year old 10 stone skinny thing to 13 stone well built through 10 years of heavy weights . Never had back problems and was healthy , now some 4 years away from weights I’m struggling with bad back . Ask @Andyrob .
Also the adrenaline of heavy weights is a must

Tbh gym is a bit pointless because what you describe sounds like chiropractic but any pt isn't worth a sh!t simply because you need someone who understands u jury rehab and these are hard to find. Trust me.

Weight will only drop so far then weights will be speed up weight loss.

im being refered to another sports pyhio who focuses more on rehab and repair/prevention of relapse, so should be able to give a few pointers with a pt as an over see that I don't do anything stupid, is my thinking.

If via the NHS and they are of the same standard here they are crap. They once told me for a knee problem to do no leg work as I was going to destroy my knee and guess whay my knee has never been as strong

I was at physio twice a week to keep me standing upright ( have spent thousands on chiropractors, osteopaths). For me this physio was the only person who has found a way to keep me from walking around in agony and a hunchback.

Not saying physio is better than others, just that is what worked for me.

He got to a point where he said he had done all he can and refferred me to a PT. I now only see him in occasion if I have a relapse.

PT session keeps me more mobile and hopefully fitter in the right way to help prevent things getting really bad. One of the best things I've done since back getting bad 8 years ago.

I would make sure you find someone who has the knowledge needed for your problems. There are plenty of personal trainers who are really just there to bark at you while you lift weight or do Burpees untill your feeling sick. I would suggest you need someone with more experience than that type.

There are lots of excerise I can't do or if I did would make things worse not better. The skill is them finding and adapting excersises to suit your situation.

thtas the waybthis place works, they have done as much as they can do after the next person and pt is to make sure after that, they didn't recommend one but I work with several in my day job, pity I can keep my mouth shut as most would like a chance to kill me, im a checky sort of person. have had a few recommendations and think I know where I will go I used to work with him up to Christmas last year, sensible sort of person, not a muscle mad man.

. I do a bit of cycling and winter running (not in summer) and was in the gym but I kind of lost heart for the gym - it was £70 a month (yes!) and nothing special and by the time you've driven 6 miles there and 6 miles back its a bit of a time killer.

I've been thinking of welding my on pull up bar and sticking it on the side of a wall as I like the idea of it. To be able to do bodyweight excercises you need to be in good shape yeah?
