Nothing surprises me these days:
My wife needed to attend the local hospital as an outpatient. The letter stated that if she could not attend the appointment for any reason she would of course, out of courtesy, need to inform them in advance. The letter actually stated: "If you fail to attend, it will be assumed that you no longer require an outpatient appointment. You will be removed from the waiting list and your General Practitioner or Referrer informed" So she got the afternoon off work, went to the hospital as requested and was greeted with the words "Oh its been cancelled!" (Nobody had "informed" us !)

That's not the point and none of our business.

It could help to know; I've recently helped a friend's Mrs avoid a pretty severe penalty.

There are sometimes legitimate ways to mitigate or entirely remove all sorts of things, it all depends on the circumstances. Parking is generally pretty black and white, it's best to admit the offence and pay up; other things can be a bit more 'grey'.

I appreciate that but I thought the point of the thread was the 24 hour payment line being closed outside business hours.

No, there’s often an argument even on parking and the adjudicator will sometimes lean on the council to compromise even if under the regs the case in black and white. Unless of course you’re obviously just taking the pee.

True, but the discussion had 'expanded'.

I think 'sometimes' would be a better word than often, which is why I wrote 'generally' earlier.
