Floppy calf

Cow calved this morning massive bull calf dosey wouldn’t suck after an hour or so of trying to convince it to. Ended up tubings it with mother’s colostrum after about 2 hours it’s turned floppy. It’s a struggle to get it to stand breathing is normal ant it’s warm in the mouth and ears.

Give it the madigan squeeze. Couple of bungee cords around the chest for a bit can make a surprising amount of difference.

I’d also give it a shot with selenium if you’re in a low area.

Thanks it’s just kicked it’s last. I have a feeling he’s been nipped during birth?

Metabolic acidosis. Common in large calves after difficult birth. Lots of vets carry bicarbonate solution now for IV injections.

sorry to hear of this loss of a calf , some of these lims are getting really hard calved compared to Charolais we have found, hope the rest of your calving season passes without any further set back

Ha thanks. We calve all year round. We’ve had a bit of trouble with cows getting too fit and growing their calves too big. We’ve got easy calving bulls too.

Cows have been in along time and weathers been mild so most people have cows fitter than usual. I had a massive char bull out of a bbx last year that took 4 days to get up after a hard calving . Scary running out of jack and the calves still stuck.

Yes been there many times. It really pushes your emotions. I’m a real stroppy f&@@&@ when on calving a cow. I’ve upset a lot of folks on with it

We rallied a calf like this a few years ago with my vet the results are very quick and impressive. The trouble is mixing bicarb is very difficult to keep in suspension you can get something specially prepared. It also works for difficult lambings, I took a sheep to my vets to lamb in the back of a trailer ended up a difficult lambing but lamb was alive the young vet hadn't heard about bicarb and she sent a nurse to Tesco's to get some, mixed it in a paste and put it under the lambs tongue results were amazing head up and bleating in minutes.

I usually get dopey calves pulled round. I thought that I was getting quite good at it. Not this time
