Flotation grain trailer tyres.

Thinking of put our old Marston 14t. grain trailer on flotation tyres. Want radials & seem to recall someone saying that a certain type didn't ride as well as some - would it be a cross-ply & is a 550 wide tyre a cross-ply only ?

What size are the current tyres?
I do not rate crossply floatation tyres, especially 500/45r22.5s, they are not up to the weights or speeds of modern equipment.

We have 2 14ton Bailey trailers with 550/45r22.5 and they are ok for what we do but I wouldn’t want too much more weight on them. As said above the higher sidewall 560s are far better but they probably won’t go on your trailer because the axles won’t be far enough apart. The ones like we have are the same height as super singles but 100 times better on the field

Current size tyres = 385/65 x 22.5 super singles.
Which are very good on the road & excellent at creating compaction View attachment 1012316
Michelin now do a 560/45r22.5 that is roughly the same height as the super singles
Nokian and BKT also do a steelbelted version of the same size and I have not found a big difference between either of the later 2.

The 560/60 will out last the 560/45 by a long bit plus are easier pulled which is noticable in wet conditions
Yes, but 560/60r22.5s are about 7" taller, which is not too much for the height of the trailer, unless near the limit of whatever is loading it. The big issue with the extra 7" is the distance between the axles on the Marston, if they fit???????????????? it will be too tight for comfort, IMO.

One of the Stewart's is in the same yard as the Marston - so I'll run the tape over them tomorrow if I get a minute. If they will fit - I think it'll be very tight under the body

I changed my trailer from 560/45r22.5s to 560/60r22.5 for exactly this reason and they can carry significantly more weight. While it worked ok on the road, when in the field and loaded the slightest bit of clay use to block it, so much so that it would have to be tipped slightly to move it in the field. It was put back on 560/45r22.5s

It is a poverty speck tractor and that is very obvious, but it is great for it. A great gutsy engine, a nice simple dyna4 gearbox, a nice simple lift and 100Lpm pump is brilliant for loader work. I only have it a fortnight, but so far so good.
Whats it like on fuel
