Fluke drench - dosing gun problem.

Dosing ewes today with triclabendazole for fluke. The stuff had been stored properly, shaken before use and was "in date". After struggling with two guns (good guns and clean too!) had to abandon the stuff and get a new batch. There must have been some small "lumps" in the drench that was causing problems with the valves on the guns. Is this a known problem with triclabendazole based drench? I know I`ve had the same problem before but can`t remember if it was the same product....frustrating...!

I know what you mean!
Guess you are talking about a traditional drench gun as we have one I use for Fasinex now which has a bigger bore pipe and inlet to the gun which stops this

Was it Tribex by any chance, we had problems with it this autumn and in the past. had to buy a new drench gun , with a bigger bore pipe to use it
Fasinex seems to work ok

this is a big bore/flow drench gun i use.make is Genesis and he works very well. wold be ideal for min/vits as well i guess.

The non return valves are better in it and the barrel is bigger bore. dfferent than usual gun.

Tribex or combinex are both difficult, and I suspect that a lot of sheep have been under-dosed because of poor flow. And then they think they've got resistance.
Warm the drench before use, and/or use one of the cheapish - sometimes free - Novartis type plastic dosing guns.

At this time of year we expect to see chronic fluke infections and therefore drugs such as Closantel or Nitroxynil are appropriate.

Triclabendazole resistance is increasing and we need to reserve its use for times when sheep are being actively infected with fluke. Even then we really need to follow up after treatment to ensure its worked. I've talked to 4 farmers with suspected resistance today.

Who the hell suggested triclabendazole in Feb?!
