flys and fly spray (sheep)

we are having a lot of trouble with strike this year, lambs were only done with ecto fly 4.5 weeks ago and desperately need doing again. Now i know that product only treats where you apply it but im getting it all over.
Im going to use dysect this time as the ectofly has only given us 4 weeks cover. Suppler has offered us more ectofly but i wouldnt take it, id sooner catch half a dozen a day and wait for the dysect.
The ewes have only been sheared 3 weeks and are getting strike already.

Prob another thread but what does everyone else use? Got about 3000 to do and its cost the earth and dont bloody work!!!!
Dip/shower???

cheers Paul

Can't beat clik but would be expensive to do now as presume your lambs are a fair size.
If so would probably use dysect now, it's a good product but not nice to use. (Nor is ectofly mind)

dip them,8 to 10 wks cover,85p ish per head but 49day w/d

It's got to be something. We do have a lot of trees and Hedges. It just seems to get worse.
Just feel let down by ectofly. Pretty much 4 weeks and in catching 8 or 10 a day.
I'm going to be pushing it wd wise on dysect but I'm not wasting money on ectofly with only a months cover. Hopefully dysect coming tomorrow. Worth catching lambs for a few days instead of getting off the shelf ectofly.

done all ours with click this year ££ , did notice one lamb had had strike in small patch under the tail today , no maggots but had been since doing a few weeks ago , not sure if click needs some rain to spread also all lambs had a discoloured patch down the back , prob go back to dysect next year on ewes but just hate the dirty black stain down the back , flies hate the stuff

Clik has a pink dye in it, which can hang about if it stays dry. That's the only discoloured patch I've seen in the years I've been using it.
Clik doesn't need rain to spread, it spreads through the lanolin IIRC.

As for the stuck lamb, has it got maggots, or just flies eggs? Clik doesn't kill anything, it just stops fly larvae developing to the stage where they bite and cause damage. Flies will still lay eggs, they will still hatch, but they never get past the (tiny) first stage, where they don't do any damage.

Ectofly, Crovect and Dysect are all synthetic pyrethroids which basically have an ability to kill a certain number of flies per dose. How long they last is very dependent on the season and the current fly challenge. It works like blotting paper and when a fly lands and then subsequently flies off and dies, well it takes an amount of active ingredient with it and this is why some years (like this year) when the challenge is very high any of these products struggle to achieve the stated cover period. I explain it as "You hang a fly paper up in your kitchen in December and it needs throwing away in April because it's full up, it can't physically kill any more flies - You hang the other fly paper up out of the pack in May and guess what, it needs throwing away because it's full up in just a few weeks!" Same product, it's only the challenge that has changed. Change products and brand names all you like but it's all down to the level of challenge in the environment with these types of fly control products. Sorry it's such a long post...!

Exactly what I do, but dysect instead of clik.

Clik has a pink dye in it, which can hang about if it stays dry.

Is that a similar thickness to clikzin? I like how thick clikzin is. And Mrs MIB likes the colour!! :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for that explanation - very interesting. I presume most people know crovect, ectofly and molecto are different brands of the same product.
Dysect is different however and whilst I hear what you're saying about it being depleted in the same way as the others during high challenge, the fact remains it is far more effective than them.

Clik and derivatives remain in a class of their own - both in the way they work, and in their effectiveness.

no live maggots, the patch of wool pulled away from under the tail where they had been about double size of a golf ball , there wernt any there at treatment as i went through them quite thoroughly at the time looking for killers and assessing carcase . Its good stuff but not sure regards cost over dysect at nearly 3 times price , just over double would be ok , taking account of cover time .
Assuming we get a decent summer, i will decide come next autumn (if i have to get the ewes in for a strike any advantage will be lost )

Have you tried the new clik extra?
No.
Bought all our Dysect and Crovect (well, actually Ectofly, this time) in an out of season deal in oct/nov last year.
Just looked up Clik Extra on the Farmacy website to check length of coverage (19 wks) and it says 'currently out of stock':banghead:
Does it do what it 'says on the tin'?
