flys and fly spray (sheep)

Ectofly, Crovect and Dysect are all synthetic pyrethroids which basically have an ability to kill a certain number of flies per dose. How long they last is very dependent on the season and the current fly challenge. It works like blotting paper and when a fly lands and then subsequently flies off and dies, well it takes an amount of active ingredient with it and this is why some years (like this year) when the challenge is very high any of these products struggle to achieve the stated cover period. I explain it as "You hang a fly paper up in your kitchen in December and it needs throwing away in April because it's full up, it can't physically kill any more flies - You hang the other fly paper up out of the pack in May and guess what, it needs throwing away because it's full up in just a few weeks!" Same product, it's only the challenge that has changed. Change products and brand names all you like but it's all down to the level of challenge in the environment with these types of fly control products. Sorry it's such a long post...!

Great post well put.

No.
Bought all our Dysect and Crovect (well, actually Ectofly, this time) in an out of season deal in oct/nov last year.
Just looked up Clik Extra on the Farmacy website to check length of coverage (19 wks) and it says 'currently out of stock':banghead:
Does it do what it 'says on the tin'?
We were involved with trials for it a few years ago and it worked then for the full season (and we have a long season down here too) but I haven't tried it since it's been on general release yet as I've adopted the @neilo approach to shearing - shearing post weaning and giving the ewes a low dose of clik early. This seems to take the risk off lambs (provided they're clean) through May/early June as the flies are attracted to the full fleece of the ewe.

'Tis the future I tell you, none of this goat breeding.......

Having said that, I got my payment statement the other day, for last year's wool. Final price for everything (lamb's wool, dags, etc) averaged 74p/kg, down from close to a pound last year.:( Maybe the goats will take over the world and we won't need to worry about which fly product to use?

Exactly what I do, but dysect instead of clik.

Is that a similar thickness to clikzin? I like how thick clikzin is. And Mrs MIB likes the colour!! :ROFLMAO:

Yup exactly.the same as clickzin just its pink not blue/green and it covers 16 weeks not 8, if your using clickzin wouldnt it be better you use click aswell? Used dysect before in work, find it similar to crovect eats leggins not very nice stuff, does it work the same way as crovect only covers the marked areas?

No dysect works through fleece same as clikzin. Just £££ and dysect never let me down

Learn somthing new, thought it was like crovect! But doesnt it leave a black mark in the fleace?

It does leave some of them looking a little dirty like. Find some types of fleece worse than others for it. But certainly not to a degree it'd make me want to use anything else. But by next lambing I'll be onto nearly all shedding ewes so will (hopefully) only need pour on for charollais sired lambs, probably clikzin the lot.

yes leaves a dirty mark , but really effective as a repellant as well , always used in the past as a sort of protection against midge( bt) activity , if they could just get a better carrier would be brilliant

Thanks for that explanation - very interesting. I presume most people know crovect, ectofly and molecto are different brands of the same product.
Dysect is different however and whilst I hear what you're saying about it being depleted in the same way as the others during high challenge, the fact remains it is far more effective than them.

Clik and derivatives remain in a class of their own - both in the way they work, and in their effectiveness.
The only technical difference is Dysect is 'Alpha Cypermethrin' were as the Ectofly, Crovect and Molecto are all straight Cypermethrin. The Alpha part makes it Lipophilic, a natural affinity to the oil in the fleece and hence it's spreadability. I love Dysect and even with its armful of negatives it is still purchased in huge volumes every year.

Dysect does work well and is good value comparatively. However, it's evil stuff to work with, and even for working with the sheep months later. It eats the applicator guns, it eats your leggings and it gets down your throat. Horrible stuff IME, enough so that I will always chose to pay the extra for Clik thank you very much.

Each to their own though, and a good job we're all able to make that choice. I dread to think what price Clik would be ramped up to if Dysect wasn't available for competition.

You guys will all be pleased to know that from July the 1st the manufacturer has put Clik, Clikzin up 3% to us guys!! Leaving us no choice but to buy next year's stock now, that's laying out approx. £250k in stock ready to be competitive next year. Surely there is a breaking point that you guys say 'enough, I'm not paying that for a product?'. My job is to advise you guys on the pro/cons of any product and then have it available at a competitive price but Clik is IMO brilliant but getting close to being to dear..?

Totally hear what you are saying and I have fed similar comments directly back to Elanco, however given the fly challenge it is probably still the cheapest per week of cover!
This does not excuse Elanco arrogance
