Folia feeding the n

So have i got this right that if we apply 220 kg ha of n only 40-50% is utilised by the wheat so if we folia feed all the n say put on 110 kgs of liquid 20 % n in the form of n20 which is melted urea we should hopefully get just as much n into the wheat as blanket applying 220 kg ha n . I know it would mean more passes through the crop . say six passes instead of 3/4 passes .

N20 is usually used as a late ear application to boost proteins in milling wheat and normally applied with a flat fan nozzle in june . It is just diluted urea so not to scorch . This is what got me thinking about it as it only is hitting the plant material at that time of year so why not use it at other times is my thought .

Nufol boosts protein by coating the outside of the grain, giving a false protein reading. To get an increase in grain protein, N should be applied earlier and taken up by the plant and converted into protein rather than going just to yield (gs 39 timing). These foliar N applications which are becoming talk of the town are a bit more sophisticated than melted urea. The products have a proportion (differs between products) of methylated urea, which is urea that has been fermented with formaldehyde to produce long polymer chains of N which are uptaken by the plant in a more palatable form.

Foliar N can only be taken up through the leaves, so you’ll still need to apply some via the roots to get the crop to that stage. Even the folks selling such products are only suggesting replacing a proportion of bag N.
