no problem with genuine users whatsoever.
and benefits are an 'intriguing' system, l have a disability, and receive a small personal independence payment. However, l thought one could claim all sorts of extras, so had a go, with the help of the local CAB, answer, zero, didn't qualify for anything extra, and the CAB said, its incredibly difficult to get anything more than the 'basic', l find that very hard to believe, as l agree with many of the remarks, on here, re, booze, fags, mobiles, big tv's etc , and the CAB tell me otherwise, l presume they know better.
I was out of work (thankfully only for about a month) and tried to claim JSA - I met the criteria but the job centre twisted and turned and brought up technicalities (I was on my final day of employment when I started my claim, for example - I knew I was being laid off). I didn't get a penny of it.

I know its wrong to generalise, but:

We are looking for part time staff at present, 2 weeks ago we had an applicant:

Long term unemployed, he came in to see us and to be blunt he made it more or less impossible to employ him:
Major issue was that he was not happy that due to moving from the next village to ours his daughter was not going to the secondary school where a free bus is provided resulting in her having to walk/bike to school, its 2 miles with a lit cyclepath beside the road all the way. Theres at least 30 children from the village now choosing to attend this school and most of them cycle, its ok for them, but seemingly not safe for his daughter who needs Dad to take her to school for 8.45 and picked up each day at 3.15pm.
His next beef was that if he started work anything he earnt over the benefit threshold level he would lose a percentage of his universal credit. the restart scheme works such that he would always be better off, but he felt he should be entitled to all his benefit plus all his earnings.

If this is the prevailing attitude we are surely doomed.

In years gone by if you didn't earn enough in your full time job and overtime wasn't available you looked for a bit extra. Now you head down the foodbank.
As to comments about food and energy bills, generally they are a fraction of what they used to be, as to clothing, many on here will remember their mum's patching knees on trousers, darning jumpers etc, clothing is now so cheap there's lots of stuff thrown out that has never even had its first wash.

A few years ago I had one employee who would routinely turn up to do concreting etc in Timberland clothing and such like, meanwhile I was wearing either Primark or stuff my wife had condemned as no longer suitable for being seen in. Eventually he went bankrupt when he couldn't pay off his £60k credit card bill, all spent on frivolous crap.

Encouraging people to use freely available credit is really good for the economy, hence the encouragement for spending and borrowing, however it is disastrous for the individual

Im old enough to remember the 3 day week in the early 1970s ( i was at school then), when the country had days without any electricity? miners were on strike, brought the heath govt. down? and other hard recessions up to now? It just seems to me the population has got so soft over the years, and far less self reliant? people years ago, many were dare i say poor, but many were proud and either didnt seek i want govt. handouts? Many people worked multiple jobs, children also helped by doing work such as paper rounds etc etc etc to help their families, farms back then could easily find casual labour, people could earn some partime money and also go home with some milk, or potatoes etc, whats happened?
People live above there means, can't cook won't cook, can be arsed to to cook, have absolutely no incentive to save money if they're able to and now it's coming back to bite them. I do however acknowledge there are some genuine cases where people are hard up & need help but I'm guessing a large majority have themselves to blame for the position they now find themselves in & instead of taking responsibility expect others (government) to bail them out. And any politician who publicly said this would be expected to resign in the modern day woke world we live in.

Tesco chairman john allen reports that his checkout staff are frequently asked by hard up customers to stop swiping items once the bill has reached £40. Shows what we are up against and how thick people are when they want tesco staff to budget for them, what happens if the first £40 worth of goods swiped arent the staples like bread, veg, milk etc but are pop , chocolate bars and crisps🤦‍♂️

I cannot possibly like this enough.

Get education fixed and the rest of the problems will largely fix themselves.

What proportion of people in jail or living on benefits in deprived areas left school with a list of qualifications?

Give young people the skills that employers want and everyone will share the prosperity.
the problem starts before school, we need to invest in pre school, so children hit infant school being able to eat with cutlery, speak and hold conversations and control their bowels. If they can't do any of that, which surprisingly some can't, then they are always behind and on their back foot and never catch up.

daughter is a reception teacher, each new intake, is less independent, dummies, nappies and 'comfort' toys, are getting more common. She is quite 'firm' with some parents, but is highly regarded by most.
Have a cousin, whose wife was still feeding her 6 yr old daughter, just couldn't cope with weaning her off, completely. Must admit, she looked, and still does, incredibly healthy, unlike her older brother, who doesn't, and was weaned off early.
well, the calves that are suckled by their mothers seem to do far better than the calves that are bucket fed and weaned early, so if it works for cattle why shouldn't it work for people. When my cousins wife had their daughter, I asked in hospital how they made sure she had colostrum (as his wife had a very hard birth very very poorly), I mentioned how important it was for my calves and lambs, she replied babies are not calves or lambs so no need for colostrum!!
