Food Poverty

Just come across this phrase, in an article in the Telegraph by Charles Moore. I think he is right, and it will be self inflicted by our governing classes too.

Theresa May’s energy price cap was a clumsy statist measure to mitigate this self-created problem. It does nothing to solve it, and it has already driven many small energy suppliers out of business.

So yes, we are indeed fuel-poor, and getting poorer. And therefore, many are cold, and will get colder.

A similar approach increasingly governs this Government’s attitude to food production. How long before we find ourselves facing policy-induced “food poverty”? I have just invented the phrase, but there is already a word for the consequence – hunger.

They can import it all. Can’t they?

If Charles Moore wants to claim inventing a phrase, then he needs to move his " to include the policy-induced bit.

Because if he is claiming to have invented the phrase "food poverty" then he is an even bigger out-of-touch-with-reality Tory Twunt than I realised.

Yes, we are soon all going to be eating ultra processed vegan alternatives.

In time these will proved to be as unhealthy as the old turkey twizzlers that Jamie Oliver hated, unfortunately by the time they decide this farming in this country won’t exist on any scale

Like the energy market, the food market is being setup for certain Billionaires to move in to the "Rescue".

All of these Government induced crysis are one thing.

But there is actually a bigger one .. the fact we have gone massively over budget even before Covid hit. If we do need to invest to get out of each problem - where is the money going to come from ? More debt ?

The system is broken and I think it's being done on purpose.

Surely there’s 20 odd ingredients in a vegan burger? Don’t they have to come from agricultural products?

yes!
Read the OP on this thread;
Thread 'German Meat Policy' https://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index.php?threads/german-meat-policy.361754/
It says cheap food has more fat, salt and sugar. So we make food more expensive (increasing food poverty) but hey the good news is you consume less fat sugar and salt?

The link to meat is selective statistics too, the Australians, Austrians and Japanese have some of the highest per capita consumption of meat yet have the longest life expectancy. They are just selecting a narrative to suit an argument/position.

There is a simple solution to obesity, cook a balanced diet from clean food and all food groups, don’t consume excess calories and get plenty of excercise. All these three are beyond I would say 70% of the population.

You are correct with your solution, but why would you say this is beyond 70% of the population?

I would say 40% can’t or don’t have the inclination or time to purchase and cook from scratch, I would surmise that 40% plus another 20% eat too many calories and I would say another 10% on top of that 60% don’t get enough excercise. Iirc correctly ‘enough’ cardio vascular excercise is getting out of breath for 20 continuous minutes per day - it actually takes a bit of doing if you have a full time job and a family and other commitments.

so really is it only mindset that is stopping them?
Or is the paradigm shift needed in the food supply chain to ensure that healthy wholesome unprocessed food is given an equal footing in the marketplace. Should the days of corporate control over the obesity calories be limited?

I would say it’s mind set. Vegetables, fruit and good lean meat and oily fish have never been so readily available or so affordable, BUT neither has cake, crisps and confectionary and processed ready meals. Mindset is stopping people excercise, it’s not hard to go out for a brisk walk, you don’t need a fancy gym membership. There is just a perception that we don’t have time to shop, cook or excercise.

Dicking around with farming systems won’t alter this.

Exactly my point. I reckon we (my household) cook, and eat well at meal times but we don’t get enough excercise and consume too much crisps and shite despite not drinking alcohol any more.

Agreed 99%. Just remove "lean" from meat and we’re up to 100%.
