On radio today talking about it as a consequence of the labour shortage plus gas shortages talk of folk stock piling essential items again.
Should we be more self sufficient again like the days in years passed?

Likely less self sufficent, shortage of abbatoir staff & vegetable harvesting gangs, so easier to import food.

Regarding shortage, I'm told caulie is now available at 40p per head in the wholesale market, growers really need 55p to break even & strawberries at times this summer have been available for 40p per punnet.

If we were allowed to produce food as we do which is responsibly, sustainably and safe with little meddling then we would never go hungry.

it's the other feckers in the mix that cause the problem. I'd say let them starve but that would be shooting our selves in the foot long term.

America are pushing their 30 x 30 legislation, basically 30% of land in conservation/ wielding by 2030, but the ambition is up to 50%. If every food producing country does similar things could be interesting.

As it is a UN resolution, promoted by the UK in particular, we can expect to see many nations adopting similar. It does not mean 30% of agricultural land but 30% of all land area therefore the effect on food supplies might not be very great. The USA is mostly pasture and forests and has historically done a rather good job of protecting its lands, it would be more difficult for us to emulate them:

Cattle & lamb prices here are at unprecedented, scarily unsustainably high prices.
Durum at over $400 / tonne
Canola ( osr ) at $900 . . .
Prices for all commodities are much higher than I’ve ever seen them.
It’s a great time to be farming.
what’s the issue ?

Not really, we waste / throw out at least 30 % of all food produced, in fact, waste food is a major contributor to climate change . . .

so - there is a fair bit of fat left in the system if we just got a bit more efficient with distribution & usage of food, more do than production

Same issue here - plenty of food, just in the wrong places. Lack of local green grocers means you are reliant on large supply chains. And those do fail. If only those shops had survived they would be booming right now.

WTF is the point of putting prices up for produce on the other side of the world ?
Look at post # 2.
Grain price ATM seems reasonable compared to the late 90's. So what ? What's wrong with wanting more ?
Do plumbers and other tradesmen peg their prices at 1990's levels, cos they're embarrassed to want more ? Don't think so.
