Routinely doubled jabbed ewe lambs in the traditional site , high neck but some get very stiff headed and go really off for a few days .
Has anyone jabbed inside back leg ? Thinking it would perhaps be a kinder site .

The symptoms you describe are a reaction to the vaccine. They occur (in some sheep) wherever you inject them ime.

Another common symptom is a lump at the injection site that may last several months. A lump inside the leg is going to be more problematic than just about anywhere else I would have thought.
The leg is also a valuable meat cut, so you really want to avoid the the potential for an abscess in the leg muscle if at all possible. The scarring, and possibly the abscess, could still be there years later, whenever they get culled.

Thank you for your reply neilo , I was thinking the head stiffness was associated with the injection site but your saying it’s irrespective , totally get the leg not being so suitable due to abscess was perhaps overthinking the job .

We tried it one year and it was a disaster so went back to the neck but now 2 of us do it, we go up the race i part the wool and hold ewe towards me and my brother jabs and we seem to get a lot less issues

We also get a lot with footvax, almost to the point that it puts me off doing the job. However we've not used a footbath all year on our 3,000 ewes and lambs so the vaccine must work! I use the Stermimatic system and like to think I do the job to the best of my ability. Is the lump caused by not giving a proper subcutaneous injection (going too deep?) or is it just that some animals react to it worse than others?

I go further back at the shoulder, skin is slacker there so easier to make a wee tent to jab into there I find, and they move about less than when you start pestering them closer to their heads.

Do you find as many lumps at shearing from jagging at the shoulder, as with jagging on the neck ?

If you jab them in the neck with a sterimatic isn’t it going into the muscle rather than under the skin? Is that ok for footvax?

I use sterimatic and get lumps on the neck. They also look pretty sick for a few days. I wonder if its going too deep and nut just under the skin. This means it is then absorbed far more quickly (which sub cut avoids) and the sheep feel rough.
In contrast I sat my ewe lambs down and did it in the front arm pit. Very controlled and deffo under the skin. They were all absolutely fine. That said, once they are fully grown this will be bloomin hard work. I will aim for loose skin down the flank in future for all sub cut injections and my vet agreed. The trouble with the lumps on the neckis you start thinking CLA....

It shouldn't go into muscle with a sterimatic, though. Worth practicing on a satsuma or similar peeler citrus to get the hang of the angle needed to go under the skin.
