Surely time for a rethink ? coronavirus , cattle / machinery and health and safety. Any good reason why they can't be rerouted FOC ? Who do we lobby ? NFU ? Hmmmm. MP's ? probably got more important things to worry about ATM.
Ideas ?

Anglesey Council has shut some footpaths where they felt there was a high risk of the public mixing too closely. However they have also posted this advice:

“We ask that all members of the public follow the requirements of social distancing and utilise their local routes rather than travelling to the countryside unnecessarily. Many footpaths and bridleways cross private land and working farms. Please keep to paths and keep your distance from landowners.”

Guess you could contact your local footpath officer and lobby him/her

I have closed my footpath unilateraly, it goes through the yard and close to the house were my grandaughter plays. What prompted me was 7 people together on sunday with dogs all over the place.

I'm going to close a path that comes through my front garden, within a meter of my side door that I use and out the rear garden. The path can be accessed from 200 meters up or down the road across my land anyway and yesterday there was a couple not local to the area (i recon) came past the house not wearing any gloves and a t 7.15 this morning a woman with a dog off the lead went past the door and across my land.
As a result of this I repaired a style so nobody can complain about access.
I also tried to talk to the rights of Way officer for this area about it but nobody will answer the phone, so ---- them.
I also had to turn a couple around today who had walked past a very visible kissing gate leaving my land.

Mine's no busier than normal I don't think. NP have closed the coast path, so I'm not getting any traffic by folks using my paths as a loop. Only got to thinking about it, as some moron had propped a self closing gate open with a stick again. One of life's irritations would be ended simply by rerouting the path around the farmyard. It would be nice to do it without arguing with ramblers / parish council for months, and forking out £5k for the privilege.

Never known as many walkers about as there has been the last few days. Half of them can’t read a map, follow the footpath signs or keep even vaguely on the path. :banghead:

I do wonder how much Coronavirus has been put down and picked up by someone else on the fences, gates & stiles where they pass from one field to the other.

I've had a gate left open 3 times yesturday [emoji24]. Lambed sheep on one side and sheep to lamb on the other, think I managed to sort them out after a bit of walking around them slowly.... Someone has accidentally put a lock on that gate now [emoji848][emoji6]

Its absolutely ridiculous to me that they cant be re routed around businesses.
Would paying the 5 grand be successful or could it still be turned down? As much as I'd hate it I think it would be money well spent.

Totally agree though, you shouldn't have to pay to use common sense.

I would suggest it is infintesimaly small.

I don't really get the problem with people on footpaths as long as following country code. I actually think its one of our countries great legacies. I do think it should be easier to move a footpath a little bit if it is very close to someones door or through a garden but beyond that they're a great asset

I think the reason is because of their history. Many footpaths could have been old pilgrim routes, thorughfares, well routes, routes to religious artefacts etc

Friend had a family in his farmyard. No footpaths in the vicinity. Kids climbing on fertiliser bags and was told he was being grumpy when asked to leave ! Another has closed the path through his yard with full support of the local ROW officer. Both blessed with living on the urban fringe.

I've f'ed a few off the place in the last few weeks. Admittedly through the yard isn't too bad for us but it's the ignorant morons that think they can walk where they like.

two couples got the riot act from my chap and they said they had permission from me and he suggested they give me a call to discuss........... I haven't heard a peep!

Here in Wales the WAG have had a rare bout of sanity, we can have paths closed or moved due to the present problem - I posted a link to the relevant legislation in another, similar, thread.

Like @SilliamWhale I am all for paths when used responsibly, but do think there should be a no-fee system for re-routing (as opposed to closing) paths that go through yards or too close to work and dwelling places.

I am minded that if a local officer could be persuaded to re-route a path in the present circumstances, it would not be too difficult to persuade a council to leave it there once all the dust has settled. Whereas, I think it would be very unlikely for a path that was temporarily closed to remain so. (y)

I think that’s optimistic, I had to clear it with parish council, ramblers, CPRE, the list goes on.

for most of them the answer is no before they have heard you out. They don’t like change and seem to think you are out to get one over on them and improve Pre opera values.

folk forget, most of the footpaths came from the legacy when people used to walk to work or use them for work purposes. Mostly, this has little to do with who uses them now.
