Surely time for a rethink ? coronavirus , cattle / machinery and health and safety. Any good reason why they can't be rerouted FOC ? Who do we lobby ? NFU ? Hmmmm. MP's ? probably got more important things to worry about ATM.
Ideas ?
Farms are places of work, people of all ages should not be allowed to walk on to a working site in this day and age.The owners and managers should have full authority on what where and when people enter that site.

I think that’s optimistic, I had to clear it with parish council, ramblers, CPRE, the list goes on.

for most of them the answer is no before they have heard you out. They don’t like change and seem to think you are out to get one over on them and improve Pre opera values.

folk forget, most of the footpaths came from the legacy when people used to walk to work or use them for work purposes. Mostly, this has little to do with who uses them now.
Yep, but now it's down to the local ROW officer or H & S. A farmer has to do his work day in day out - real, meaning mixed / livestock farmers that is... :angelic:

I have to check my stock in the lands, at the least, twice a day; lambing is coming for me too soon, plus I've cattle in the yard and 101 other things to do about the place. I'm lucky, no path through my place, but if there was and if I was ill, I'd still have to do my work. That must be the situation for hundreds of others around the UK, plus there is the risk of catching it from someone coming by.

There is simply no way that anyone can tell me that I can't leave the house if I have hundreds of animals to care for, that being so the ROW and / or H & S would have to move a path, or close it, if there were one here. This isn't a planning matter. And, once moved, there is very good case to keep it moved, unless there were unforeseen problems from having done so.

@SilliamWhale i’ve got multiple footpaths through the farm/yards.. had a very arrogant couple today walking through lost. Any idea who I speak to do temporarily close the paths? I know Dad told someone to “f off” the other day when they went to open a gate for him. Due to the amount of walkers my parents/staff over the age of 60 have all had to finish for the season incase a walker transmits the virus onto a gate.

Paint the top of the gate with iodine if you are worried. It kills all virus within seconds. Then put a notice on the gate saying "This gate has been treated, please do not touch". As iodine stains, it will be easy to see. It is pretty harmless to most people, but those with thyroid problems should avoid too much contact.

The chances of picking up the virus from a gate outdoors appear to be so infinitesimal (ie outdoors uv rays, need to be an infected person with virus on their hands, needs to be consqeuntly picked up again and ingested by the next person).

I'm going to close a path that comes through my front garden, within a meter of my side door that I use and out the rear garden. The path can be accessed from 200 meters up or down the road across my land anyway and yesterday there was a couple not local to the area (i recon) came past the house not wearing any gloves and a t 7.15 this morning a woman with a dog off the lead went past the door and across my land.
As a result of this I repaired a style so nobody can complain about access.
I also tried to talk to the rights of Way officer for this area about it but nobody will answer the phone, so ---- them.
I also had to turn a couple around today who had walked past a very visible kissing gate leaving my land.
What you need is a big barky dog, I may know where you can get one!?

I have closed my footpath unilateraly, it goes through the yard and close to the house were my grandaughter plays. What prompted me was 7 people together on sunday with dogs all over the place.

By far the best policy. Make sure you waymark well, the diversion/alternative route. You cannot deal with the real idiots this way, but IME the moderate and sensible majority will take heed and help, and you can then have a real go at the complete eedjits...

Drop a line to the Clerk of the local PC and to Highways at your local Council too, explaining your action and why.

If they bitch, dob 'em into the Press! But I bet they won't...

Think I’ve been lucky so far. We have a footpath that goes right by the dairy. In normal times my guys often give walkers a tour of the calf hutches which I see as good advertising for the industry. We have put up some signs regarding corona virus and sticking to the rules and the path. As far as I know everyone has been very good about it and there have been a few new walkers.

http://www.iuva.org/COVID-19 Particularly note this passage from the IUVA:
"It must be noted that “UVC”, “UV disinfection” and “UV” as used here and in the scientific, medical and technical literature, specifically and importantly refers to UVC light energy (200-280nm light) in the germicidal range which is not the same as the UVA and UVB used in tanning beds or sunlight exposure. "

Now are you prepared to risk touching an outside surface soon after several unknown people have done so?

To be honest the risk is still infintesimal and being outside it will detoriorate a lot quicker.

Am I willing to risk touching something that someone with covid has touched? Given the fact that I go shopping, kiss my kids etc then yes probably I am. I dont think being tyrannical about people on footpaths is going to cause a covid-19 spike
