If you ‘always get on well’ with Redstart, why change anything?

You might save a quid or two a kilo with some Johnny come lately variety, but is £3-4/ac either here or there against a variety that you know works for you?

Stick with your Redstart, and perhaps mix some stubble turnips in to add a bit of variety?
You are a card. 🤣🤣🤣

It should be fine. I’m pig drilling some Massif turnips just now that was bought new this year, but is resealed 2018 seed according to the label.
hopefully but i would still like to see some sprout before i use it, was in a 20ft container and very dry but not too cool at times when its sunny ...:cautious:.

i nearly always work over the weekend :cautious:.

doubt ill get it in , or do any hay making :ROFLMAO::oops:as its going to rain heavy,
but next week will do.

Most farmers do, don’t they? Especially when there’s work needs doing.

You’d have to be very ‘brave’ to try hay making I’d have thought. Heavy rain moving through this weekend with a showery week to follow?

Last silage field baled & clearedthis morning, Maincrop turnips pig drilled in this evening, 200 ewes under cover and yard set up for shearing early tomorrow. Catching up slowly.:)

I’d liked to have got another 20ac of ground disced down ready for grass seed but can’t do everything, along with being a bit concerned about drilling ahead of July heat…

'tother way around here decided to get a couple of fields of grass seeds in and they are now coming up nicely. Tremendous growing conditions this morning.
no shearing done except the shedders no silage made as it was late laid up.

but yes its still a compromise at times when trying to prioritise jobs on a smaller unit, no matter how hard i try i cant do 2 jobs at
once 😳

Same here. Grass seeds up , roots in, some bales done, shearing next week between the showers!🙂

Thought I’d ask thoughts, normally would of planted kale for the cows in late may early June but with an abundance of grass an one or two other issues have struggled to get a field bared off!! I’ll be DD into burnt off grass with the Aitchison! With all the rain we’re having is it worth trying kale still or should I just go with rape turnip mix? Normally don’t graze until Christmas!! I’m thinking kale still as were having the rain but 🤷‍♂️

well times going on now ..
and when the ground dries out enough im going with F.rape and a few s turnips.
also i want something as vigorous early on as poss. to deal with the potential flea beetle challenge
might also be better than kale in that respect for your direct drilling.?

Getting sowing atm .

What I'll do for is put down a few strips of each as a trial .
That is....
Hobson FR
a Mix of FR with Frisia ST in.
and Redstart. ( which actually last year coped with just about with 4 or 5 frosts total, went down to about -3 at times as well)

But we'll see for interest.

Happy days.

lot of Frisia disappointingly lying on the deck (im not surprised tbh was half expecting it ) untouched, poor anchorage , Hobsons alright for a simple rape. but im going to say Redstart wins again for me. even with their stumps left ,better feed value more palatable more disease resistant better overall.
ill get a pic if i remember.
another kind winter again though , hardly any frost (so far ) .well there we are.

One swallow don't make a summer ,
but apart from the weather all that went into growing the bulb has not been used as feed for the sheep anyway ,it will go back in when its ploughed but that's not quite what we grew it for.
and by its nature stubble turnip top is far smaller than redstart all other things being equal.
