Err he’s certainly thinking outside the box(n) two motors each driving a pair of wheels would be a lot better way of doing it imo
That was my first thoughts too, but he says he wanted a solid positive drive to both sides without resorting to electronic trickery. I think a variable speed motor to the steering would improve things.
Could see it working great in a field situation with gps guidance

That’s nothing new I was on community service with lads that had been (probably still where/are) growing weed like that for years !.
Agree the technique been around for a while now, it is the scale of these operations and where they intend to site them that interested me.
We could soon see self sustaining cities. The possible consequences could mean the ag machinery as we know it disappearing.
The role of farmers quickly moving towards park keeping, which seems to fit with Gove's thinking

the weathers going to get my farm long before that if it keeps going the way it is.
im only suckler here but its nearly a waste of time now, there is less and less cattle around here, its a dying trade imo.
the sucklers at least.
hard to beat a paying job imo.

I would say there's probably more to go wrong in that mechanical linkage than their would be in an electronic setup with a motor on each side. He already has one variable speed motor controller to set his forward speed so I don't see why he couldn't use another one the very same and put the control lever on the other side so that it drove like a familiar skid steer.

I see what you mean, and a stepper motor at each wheel would be maybe ideal
but in this application he seems to have gone for a very robust and positive drive and easily understood if there is a problem.
Would be interesting to know if its been done before, or if he had a Eureka moment

To be honest I looked at that system of sprockets and my head started to hurt trying to figure out how it works!

I'm an electrical engineer though so each to their own!

Love this guy. His enthusiasm is amazing and his bodging skills really are next level, making it up as he goes along. Well worth watching all the build videos just for the bodging. I especially love the way he adjusts the hole saw so he can drill accurate holes, using an angle grinder to make bolt holes in the hard steel of the epicyclics because his drill bits are too soft, crossing the roller chain over:rolleyes:, wrapping a bit of plate from a stainless cup to make a bush to squeeze between axle and wheel hubs (which are actually some sort of pipe fixtures), using some wire for bearing supports and riveting on the bucket teeth. I mean just incredible stuff there it really does put some of the work in the bodgers thread to shame. His solar powered workshop is pretty neat too.

I think the whole design is clever but overly complex and I think it would be a fair bit more expensive to make than 2 motors in a skid steer arrangement. He seems to get around that by buying everything frugally when he sees parts he may need come up cheap on the internet then codging it all together. Impressive stuff but wouldn't want to scrape the yards with one.

His steering system would work good on a big track layer, No clutches or brakes to worry about, and a really solid method of keeping the tracks turning at the same speed

I’ve watched quite a few of his videos now, since this thread was started.

It’s interesting and entertaining, as said, his enthusiasm for his projects is infectious, if a little crazy at times!

He did make me think of the bodging thread in one video particularly, when he said the washers that he was using were old rivet heads that he’d drille out of stuff, because he ‘saves’ them :nailbiting::D....that’s dedicated bodging right there;)(y)

If you come across him making thin cement panels, can you post a link, i lost track of it, he was basically using cement instead of fiberglass resin with burlap?? reinforcing

This one, watch number 65, and possibly 66, there’s more of the same. Can’t find number 64 myself, unfortunately.
It’s working surprisingly well, don’t think he’s got to the actual roof sections yet.....
But the thin bits he’s putting round the windows have come out better than I thought they would, actually better than he thought I think:D
