Just wondering how this works ? do the farmers and hauliers involved all give straw and services free of charge as donations ?

See a few farmers on twitter etc tweeting about the straw they are baling to help the livestock farms and wondering if they are being charitable or are they making money from it ?

A few saying they are baling it for the first time in years round here to help them out. I think it’s more down to the bottom line. They haven’t said they are giving it away but I guess more along the lines as to help flood the market and reduce the price. Or just profit from a string deband and price market. Who knows. Certainly more acres being baled for sure.

some are donating I believe but others seem to be using the hashtag and are actually flogging the stuff for as much as they can, a few have been called on it.

By all means sell it, but don't make out you are doing it for charity whilst actually selling!!!

Yes this was what I didn't think was very clear and possibly rather misleading

its like me claiming charity for growing wheat and saving people from starving when in truth it's actually about the ££ not a desire to save starving people !

I think it was wheat daddy on Twitter telling everyone he was baling straw for the first time in years to help the livestock sector. It wasn't immediately apparent what he was charging for it.....

Don't know if he's on here to comment.

Surely the idea of being in business is to make money though?
Yes I agree with you 100% so with that in mind .loading an Irish truck that you may not see back again until their next
catastrophe , how many more times do they expect us to bail them out , makes no sense at all. Local farmers have not said they won't pay what is asked for the hay but no one wants to load them. but they see it passing their farm lanes in Irish Trucks.
A true businessman would surly supply those who are more likely to come back next year

I've had two farms phone me and say they prefer to chop but for this year only they are willing to bale to help out .I never asked them to do it for nothing , this is a big gesture for a confirmed chopping man

Let's give them a clap for God's sake

Most fields round here are being baled
Straw is needed not just in the U.K. so it will all get used

Just look around not just I your back yard
At least we can help by making sure there is supply at a profitable price for livestock to survive next winter

Look at the horific pictures from Australia where there is no spare feed for a thousand miles within Australia and 3000 miles or more overseas

I’m a confirmed chopping man

But make no mistake I only turned the chopper off this year because of the price this year

Everyone selling it is a money man

If they are not they would be giving it to those in need

Is anyone actualy giving straw to forage aid ? And are any hauliers moving it for free ? If they are then that is indeed very commendable and charitable. If they are charging then it’s not imo

Doesn’t seem clear from twitter if it’s charity or just selling straw - there is a big difference and I just wanted to know which it was

No there is no fodder aid ,but I have friends who have baled straw with the honest intention of helping those in need
If i was a money man I would be loading Irish Trucks
But then I may as well turn the lights out when it's all gone as I would lose all the customers I have That keep me going
So perhaps not

And how could I ever look my farmer friends in the eye ever again

I won't give them a clap if they're selling straw to make money no. It was a commercial decision and good luck to them.
