Have folk grazing them after Xmas and into March seem to stand up to bad weather well.yeah but how hardy?............. for after Christmas use ? might have a go at them next year ,
as hardy as low dm fodder beet ?Have folk grazing them after Xmas and into March seem to stand up to bad weather well.
Leaves don’t like too much wind as can get damaged easily.
as hardy as low dm fodder beet ?
they would be better feed , few bales of hay put out and could be spot on, whereas fb lack the protein. thats a big issue ir.
yes , then in practice it would mean a larger acreage which is not so good if youre on a smaller area..IME stubble turnips are hardier than the lowest DM fodder beet (like Brigadier), but DM yield is a fraction of beet. That is the only place that fodder beet gains really, in that it produces huge DM yields making it just about the cheapest fodder crop (per kg of DM).
It does need to be stripped grazed with regular fence moves to make sure they get top & root together though, whereas turnips or swedes can be on 4-7 day breaks.
Spin what do you think about drilling fodder beet after early winter barley ,to eat off feb march ,fodder beet arn't the crop they were in virus areas...i'm looking for a replacement

Beet lifting man ,said some one had done it ,and got about 18 ton acre last year , will find out more about what they didSurely the seed cost would rule that out? Would it not just grow tops, with roots no bigger than turnips, then get hammered by a hard frost?
I think you’re due a new bucket! We had some fair sized neeps from ours this year. Samson stubble turnips after winter barley.

trouble is we run plenty of young and old females, the idea for me Frisia would be an easier bite .I’ve found Massif maincrop turnips to be a good halfway house between swedes and stubble turnips. Certainly more
