Have folk grazing them after Xmas and into March seem to stand up to bad weather well.
Leaves don’t like too much wind as can get damaged easily.
as hardy as low dm fodder beet ?
they would be better feed , few bales of hay put out and could be spot on, whereas fb lack the protein. thats a big issue ir.

IME stubble turnips are hardier than the lowest DM fodder beet (like Brigadier), but DM yield is a fraction of beet. That is the only place that fodder beet gains really, in that it produces huge DM yields making it just about the cheapest fodder crop (per kg of DM).

It does need to be stripped grazed with regular fence moves to make sure they get top & root together though, whereas turnips or swedes can be on 4-7 day breaks.

yes , then in practice it would mean a larger acreage which is not so good if youre on a smaller area..

fodder beet arn't the crop they were in virus areas:(...i'm looking for a replacement

I’ve found Massif maincrop turnips to be a good halfway house between swedes and stubble turnips. Certainly more reliable & cheaper than swedes here, and higher DM yield than stubble turnips. Much higher yielding (& cheaper seed) than Green Globe, and the sheep eat them (unlike G Globe ime).

The biggest advantage of stubble turnips is the ability to take a crop off first of course. Higher yielding root crops come at a cost of having to be in the ground for longer.

We had some fair sized neeps from ours this year. Samson stubble turnips after winter barley.
