do about 50 acre silage all between half mile and amile good road network what are forage wagons like diffrent sizes and tractor size
and output , would like to clear 20 acres aday of single cut. any thoughts much appreciated

What's your budget? For 50 acres a year, you won't want to be spending more than sat £10-12K? Taarup / kvernaland 465 with a new TFM rotor

We are in season 6 and 4 different contractors as they seem to sell the wagon after they have been to us . Distance is 100 yards to a mile away from the pit.
Clearance is 4-6 acres an hour. Even a smaller wagon would easily do 25 acres in a short day. I would find a contractor if possible as you need plenty HP up front. We cut and ted around 100 acres. Used to hire a buckrake but bought a decent used one so no hassles and only need to arrange the wagon and rowing man.
It is longer chop and buckraking is harder. However, no problem or expense getting 3 or 4 trailers now. Only one machine running over the ground and if you have some awkward corners the grass still goes in the wagon and not blasted over the trailer.
I am surprised more do not use them though I see a dairy farm has got their own now.

have a 9ft mower cond crop usally quite heavy crop ,would you lift asingle mower swath or would you put 2 swaths into one.

You need to look at spec but some will be fine with 120hp. The grass should be going in across the blades to get a better chop 2 rowed into 1 would be fine.

I just bought a Krone AX 250GL for 26K working it with my 135hp 313 Fendt. because it was just small bouts I was running at like 12kph sometimes more without breaking a sweat well until your trying to get that last little bit in the trailer and trying to go up a hill then she fairly notices
Cleared 12 acres without rowing up at about 6-7 ton an acre in a day at 2 miles away so should easily cope with 20 @ 10 ton an acre next to the farm.
Used 8.7L of fuel per load.
I suspect you will really struggle to find anything decent for less than 20k.
Hoping to get a auto rower for the mower to make 6m bouts.

Strautmann super vitesse 2 with 120+ hp.
9ft rowed up unless it's very heavy. Light crop 3 into 1. £8k to 20k for a very clean one.

yes budjet about that.

That distance 20 acres would be quite easy. If your not on steep fields a 100 hp semi powershift tractor would cope fine.

A pottinger torro with 130 will do 3 acres an hour at ease , I have 3 wagons , two big jumbos , we clear up to 12 acres an hour , the way it is is more power means more output, the torro can take 200 hp, and will push on up to 50 acres a day on short draw. The key is dry grass . Never pick wet grass . Ted out and rake . picking out of 10 ft swards is not a good idea as the grass is rarely dry enough.

I read in the past that they are far more efficient fuel wise, so I think in the future they will become more the norm as diesel goes up in price

We average for the complete outfit from mowing to the loader on the pit an average of 14 litres per acre , Sp outfits are double this, last week I had the perfect example of the differance in efficiency of the wagon versus a trail led harvestor, a neighbour has a jf900 and it broke down, he draws in with 4 14 ft trailers , 3 tractors drawing in . I went in with the jumbo 7210 wagon which is a big machine , it brought the same as 4 of his trailer loads , I was bringing 3 acres in every load , it was a 3 mile draw and I completed it a lot quicker than he could with 3 tractors drawing and a tractor on the harvestor . With the bigger wagons lads are amazed at how fast we can clear grass now. The tractor on the wagon will use less fuel than a tractor on a trailer harvestor , the differance is that that includes drawing in As well.

contractor who does my silage has a wagon I believe too, as well as a self propelled. Said the buckraking into the pit is far more of an issue, I wonder where the point is where the wagon would be the preferred choice? At the moment he does my silage in half a day with two trailers (mind you I think you could put my 100hp tractor in the back of the trailers and not see it over the sides!)
