Ford 40 series transmission problem

Hi,

got a problem with my 7740 sle - 'K' reg, 1993 pre quad-mod - engage gear, lift clutch pedal - transmission engages (jerkily?) and drives for a couple of seconds before drive drops out and error code E22 comes up. My manual says E22 is current at PWM valve too low? PWM valve faulty? I heard that its a bugger to do on the pre quad-mod unlike the later ones where its easy? Worth trying to do it myself or get it trailered to the dealer? All advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Trailer to scrap yard!! 40 series were the worst tractors Ford made they lost out to Deere big time many years ago where I use to work they had six in 12 months all but one was a problem tractor sold them all and replaced with Deeres

I had a k reg 8240
Did the exact same, clutch was always jerky and never cured it. It would drive about 6 inch then give up.
Changed pwm valve and no different, so tested all solenoids in the valve chest that controls gear & clutch actions, replaced clutch solenoid for good measure but still no different.
So pressure tested the oil flow and it was spot on.
We where puzzled, 3 mechanics, 2 NH dealers and still a dead tractor.
Finally worked out that the aluminium valve chest that holds the clutch and gear valves was warped, so when you wanted to release the clutch it was nipping a valve. We didn't know which one so we cleaned up all the valves with a light grinding paste, this let the tractor drive, but the as soon as the oil got up to temperature it would nip a valve, any valve and stop.
2 months of this an I was suicidal
It went to York sale as a non runner an made good money.
I could of replaced the Ali valve chest an it could of cured it, it was £2500
But after it wasted all my time and money I was pleased to see it go.
Good luck with yours

I bet ploughman is really grateful for that bit of highly productive advice
only speaking the truth, six in 12 months only one good one out of six!! You would be driving along when transmission would get knocked out and you would be free wheeling very dangerous,40 series didn't do Ford any favours there!!

I've occassionally had that on my 8240. A calibration usually sorts it or check out the big multiplug above the battery for bad connections.Unless I'm thinking of something else, the pwm valve just screws into the outside if the valve block and is easily changed.

don't be daft they sold heaps and heaps of 40 series tractors. Loads of people have got lots of hours out of them - bombproof engine.

2 farms next to each other, ts115 tractors, (same as your 40 series), both with loaders:

Farm A - has 18 year old drivers, uses the most biggest 5 furrow reversible plough he can find, huge shakerator and hammers the life out of tractor on 14 ton trailers full of muck. He moans that tractor is un reliable - sure thing -in 2500 hours the brakes are shagged and gearbox worn out - fact is he was a tight arse and sales man sold him too small a tractor for the job - he needed an 8560, but too tight to pay.

Farm B has steady drivers aged 60, Tractor does grass raking, 10 ton silage trailer and hedge cutting. - tractor does 11000 hours in 10 years and all it has needed is a set of tyres, batteries, water pump, gear box switch and an alternator.

Your 10 series JD's did me well in brakes, head gaskets and fuel pumps. Made a good wage out of them!

7840 sle we had was great, only things needed on 8,000hrs were one link arm, top link bracket, 2 hydro pipes under the cab, couple of batteries and one alternator, oh and a set of boots.

Really helpful that,in fact after a few teething problems with the transmission they were very successful, even the sacred 10 series JDs had their fair share of problems, head gasket service anyone?

Only speaking from experience, what ever you did don't turbo a 7840sle last about 6 months then new engine needed!! Ploughman my need to check alternator remember pto not working on 77 turned out to be alternator faulty.

Well, sorted EC4 - uncalibrated clutch. Bit the bullet as getting nowhere and rang to enquire price of new PWM valve - fell over when told £400 - no bigger than a thimble! Then tried Mark Robinson at Preston who had a s/h one for £120. I tried what someone on here or BFF suggested and ran through the recalibrating procedure and was delighted when I found all was working normally when I had done :). Fair do's to Mark Robinson - who was good enough to put the PWM valve back on the shelf.
Thanks all for the help.
