Ford 6410 or case 885xl

Currently looking for a tractor for straw chopper, but thats also capable of summer jobs ie haybob etc
Seen ford 6410 and case 885xl for similar money
What are peoples thought please

case engine would be a safer bet than the ford, but overall it will depend on the individual tractor and how its been used and maintained (or not) for the last 30 years. need a bit of luck with these things.

Them 10 series Fords are big money now. Something 20 year younger would be the same price.

A new 6410 was way better than a new 885xl. They are both 30 + years old now though. The first owner will have looked after / serviced regularly. The second owner....maybe. The 3rd and forth owner.....entering horse yard ownership at this age. The 885 I owned had a good engine, and never had any problems with hydraulics / PTO. The gearbox was woeful. Torque Amplifier was weak.
To sum up, a well cared for 885 may well be a better investment than an abused 6410. Thoroughly look over, and try out both.

Have old ford and 844xl. Case far better place to spend the day though xl cabs are notorious for rot and mines no different, engine never seen a spanner bar servicing and been treated hard. Slow hydraulics compared to ford.

Ford will hold it’s money better.

I don’t think there’ll be nothing between them. It will purely depend on the individual tractor and how they’ve been looked after / treated.

probably the 6410 be best. We had one new I’m trying to remember how sharp it was engaging the pto as we have a 6600 and it’s brutal starting up the straw bedder only use it as last choice

the 600 series are awful for straw choppers for this exact reason, family member's 4600 was so bad on straw chopper (pto startup) it was replaced with 5610 which was a fair bit better. not sure about the pto on an 885xl.

844 a vastly different tractor from an 885 mind.

the 600 series are awful for straw choppers for this exact reason, family member's 4600 was so bad on straw chopper (pto startup) it was replaced with 5610 which was a fair bit better. not sure about the pto on an 885xl.

The ten series have a much better pto engagement lever than the old 600s it’s much easier to feather the pto in with a ten series tractor.

if you can stretch to it a white cab ford 40 series or a 956xl would be a much better buy imo

I'd have an 844 or 856 rather than the 885. Much more capable, nicer to drive and a hand clutch for the pto if sharp pto engagement is a worry.

I would be looking hard at the cab frame of the 885 XL as they can be a serious rot box

Comparing an 844 to an 885 is like comparing a fiesta to a GT40.
