I was only about 18 at the time but I can remember the independent ford fitter putting a pressure gauge on the spool block and if I'm right he said it was a matter of just adjusting the pressure relief valve up . After he set it up for the first few weeks we did go through a few old damaged pipes. But by Christ did it transform the machine . One thing to watch out for on the older ford diggers was the battery cables that go over the bell housing to the starter they run under the fuel tank and do rub and perishes due to spilt diesel running down on them I would either replace with new or at least put a protective sleeve on them . When they short out its bye bye machine .

And clean all terminals before doing anything else.
Full charge then disconnect overnight, see if its any livelier next morning.
If not you probably need a battery. If its spinning faster, you might have something draining the battery.
Get the lorry battery (1200 CCA if I remember correctly) if you have to replace.

Heater plug working?

Does the 655c have an inline fuel pump ? Or is it a rotary pump ?
If it's an inline pump are you using the excess fuel button on the side of the fuel pump ?

Depended how they felt at the factory I think. I’ve got a very late 655 with inline pump, dad had a very early (same year as mine) C series with a rotary and have seen older ones with a rotary pump and most of the C and D series have a rotary but have seen some eith an inline. I would not be surprised if the odd balls had a blue block but all the ones I’ve seen look to be original ish anyhow!!

On the subject of 655s, has anyone removed the trumpets lately? Need to do the brakes on mine on one side due to a seized pivot rod before I bough it. Remember doing a 550 near on 20 years ago which was a struggle and have been advised to remove diesel tank and bonnet, remove chassis bolts underneath the trumpet and drop the skid unit down about 6 inches. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Yes, no need to remove ...............
Unless you want to pull the flexible breather pipe see if its smoking?
Also worth working the primer on the lift pump ...............
