Ford 6600 overfueling?

Hi.
It's not a 66 but a 66 engine in our old Sanderson.
It's been relatively fine up until a few days ago when it began to run a bit rough. Went through the usual fueling new filters etc but it got worse and now it hardly starts, won't tick over rough as a dogs goolies until quite fast when it seems OK except for lots of black smoke and no power. I've taken the inlet hose off at the manifold and the exhaust off at the manifold and it's no better just noisier. I'm stumped but suspect the pump, I know my way round rotary pumps but nothing with inlines. Can you get stuck racks in these or other problems, it was quite a sudden deterioration so obviously something has stuck/broken/decided to be annoying.
Any ideas?

check the oil level in the pump or better still change it if not done regularly use same as engine ,the rack can stick but if stuck wide open it would rev its nuts off ,if stuck off it wouldn’t start ,but black smoke and no power doesn’t sound like stuck rack. timing may have slipped

Is the pump fed with engine oil or does it have its own oil? If it’s not fed off oil gallery check oil level first thing. Can you get the side plate off to have a look inside at the elements, springs and rack? How is access?
Access, in the true sense of British understatement, could be described as 'limited'. Its next to the cab with radiator, boom mountings and chassis rails all adding their bit. I have no idea about oil stupidly I just imagined they were lubed like rotors with the diesel.

I'll try new oil but it may be a bit late!!!
Timing as in what sense, aren't they all gear set?

The timing of the inline pump is adjustable three screws in slotted holes in side the front timing cover ,there’s a reMovable plate in front of the pump. i’ve never seen one sleep mind, but if it’s got no oil in the pump may have put pressure on

I doubt the timing has slipped. One thing you could try is some ATF in the fuel. Our old Sanderson has the same engine and would stop when shutting down the revs. The ATF seems to clean an lubricate. I wonder if you have an injector gone wonky?

Is the cold start/excess fuel button stuck in? That can make them run rough with lots of black smoke.
When the head gasket goes its more a blue grey smoke than black, engine trips over itself and ours will hardly rev enough to take drive up.

Is it breathing heavily?

Once had a lift pump diaphragm rupture and let diesel into the sump (in line pump has to be lubricated from the engine, not from it's own isolated sump).
It smoked like hell and had no power but was blowing fuel/oil mix fumes out of the breather.

Thanks for the replies. I have isolated the lift pump and fitted an electric one as I kept getting fuel run back. I have no idea of the age of the engine but it's a replacement one with the webbing on the block buy an inline pump. I will get a few moments today to hopefully prod further.

A quick update. I remembered an old trick I was shown by an AA man years ago to identify faults in engines using easy start. I gave it a squirt and it was only firing every other stroke so really that points to head gasket as the quickest way to lose two cylinders.
I need to buy a kit but don't know the exact engine so it's a webbed block inline pump is that 6000, 6600, 6610 or are they all the same gasket wise?

The head gaskets are the same for the 600,10 series and 40 series but you'd need to check the thickness in case your head or block has been skimmed before. Two different thickness are available.(and maybe more).
