You have to drain the oil and remove the 4 wd drop box. 12 and 13 are the piston seal o rings.

No need to pull 4 w/d apart not saying seal's can't blow but i have never had to replace them as primary cause, block up tractor so rear wheel's are just clear of ground not on jack's or axle stand's start engine engage 4 w/d drive low gear and very gently release clutch pedal if tractor tries to pull it's self off block's disengage 4 w/d and try again rear wheel's only should turn and tractor remain still if so 4 w/d is working, if not then pull it apart...

I have the same issue on an early 7610 with the zf axle.

Power getting to the solenoid but cant hear or feel anything happening inside when right up beside it.

Can I open the solenoid housing without draining the whole back end of oil?

Yes but have something ready to stuff in the hole its just under an inch in diameter, i stuffed some rag in there to stop the oil trickling out as it won't stop.

When you have solenoid out wash it in brake cleaner gently blow dry and apply 12v live to terminal body earth and watch for spool movement in small slot's in valve end of assembly you should hear click as current is applied and removed if so chances are it's ok..

took my solenoid out, gave it a clean with some WD40 and it seemed to work on the bench. reinstalled it and no clicks to be heard, with the cover off and lying under the tractor.

wiring looks good, seeing only .06 voltage drop between the battery terminals and the solenoid.

oil doesnt look immaculate but not dirty either so can't imagine it's getting grit or something in it to block it, especially not instantly after being installed and before the tractor has even started.

Worryingly someone has been in there before and the terminal on the solenoid is a bit bodged. I'll take it back out and see if I can bodge it a bit better and also bench test it in a cup of oil.

I think the oil is deadening the click when it's installed. Try checking if your 4wd is now disengaging. As mine seems to be disengaging, I applied the handbrake on a steep slippery slope and I just slid down the slope with rear wheels locked, tried with 4wd engaged and it stopped almost dead. Still have a rear axle whine though

I'd have said the rear axle whine is normal. Cousin had one from new and with the back window open, the noise was deafening. Seemed much worse with a grain trailer on as the noise was being amplified by the trailer headboard. It never had a spanner on the back end or gearbox in the 30yrs he had it.

I had an 8200 before and it didn't have this whine though. And I dont recall it on the 6600 either, although I don't think I ever took that down the road at full chat.

That is a possibility too. I need to take a long screwdriver and stethoscope it.

I can't test anything right now as the front axle is still going back together after doing seals, bushing, swivels and U joints. but like yourself a spin with the shaft removed would be on the cards. I've no guard so an easy job to drop it.

Now wondering if this whine is the real reason last owners sold it, as prop guard was removed when I bought it.

I think there was too much going on in the neighbours this morning, was quiet this evening and I couldn't hear it clicking so have buttoned it up for now. Will have it all back in one piece for the weekend hopefully so will test and see

Sorry for butting In on year conversation but have 1991 Ford 7610 and my 4x4 is slapping on and off gets worse when tractor gets hot do ye think it is solenoid problem because dual power works fine and it does stay off on road it loading it gets bad have shaft taking off afraid it will bust something and it’s a dream to drive with out shaft

It may well be, I will remove the shaft at the weekend and give it another try. I did wonder if some dirt is stopping the solenoid closing completely, so when at high revs the higher pressure allows enough oil through to re engage the 4wd.
