8340sle is 1996 with about 7000 hrs - generally been pretty good, spent some money doing a few oil leaks on the front axle and engine balancer. Pulls like a train.

7740sle 2wd with about 5000hrs - lovely handy tractor, use it for spraying but will do most jobs. Would be good on a loader. Only repair recently was PTO valve - bit of crud in a hydraulic port, ended up costing about £800 mostly in labour!

I'd quite like to find a tidy late one, especially if it's an SLE. Unlikely, though.

The Renault, although it was an excellent tractor, was just too old.
Could you get a 5640 SLE?
Man along the road from us had an S reg 5640 turbo (y)
Was a cancelled export order iirc and had sat at basildon for a while
It went extremely well :)

They were mega rare. Not many people require a tiny tractor with powershift!

I really like the 40 series but I have never got on with their back ends - the linkage just isn't as user-friendly as a GIMA in a Renault or MF. The swing-out hitches are rubbish after a few thousand hours, too.

Here are my two 7840s

The Blue roof is a "S" plate Dual Power with 12900hrs now. Shes my favourite but has had to have both the engine and DP pack done in the last year. Did it myself so not to much ££££

Used to do all the sowing with her till I got a TM. It was worked very hard when it was younger, though its still doing about 700/yr nowadays.

Taken just the other day

The White roof is a "M" plate SL Dual power.
Had it from new and is just short of 15000hrs.
Engine never been touched other than a Starter and a Alternator
Dual Power was done about 6000hrs, brakes about 12000hrs, and she got a PTO pack and Hyd pump about 13000hrs. Again did it all ourselves so not too bad.
Old man says it will do him out!

5640 Turbo would effectively be a 7740 really, thats all they are, a 56 engine boosted up, not a 6640 as many think.
Never had a 77 but have heard of ones knocking out 140hp after a serious 10mm remap back in the day.

I thought 7740 was basically a turbo'd 6640
Does the 5640 not have a 4.4 stroke same as the 10 series (and 7840? While the 66 and 77 have 5' stroke
I'm probably imagining it :scratchhead:
No matter anyway, the 5640 T went well, as does our slightly remapped 7740(y)

Yup, low hours for its age an definitely worth a look at that price!

It is missing its door mirrors and front weight bolster. All available from MJ Robinson 2nd hand.

Panels look straight but paint missing. So 1-2 cans red oxide and maybe 4 ford blue and 4 grey will sort them out. I'd repaint the wheels with 2 coats of Hamerite white smooth and she'll look lovely!

Transfer decals particularly good! Already got replacement seat cushions and front plastic mud flaps good

Check that the hydraulic pressure light goes out when she starts and that it doesn't flash when changing any power-shift gears. If it is on permanently remove the wire from the vertical hydraulic temperature sensor. If the light goes out now, the sensor is faulty when the oil is definitely cold. Easily replaced.

Also check front wheel steering rose bushes. May need gas to cut them out if seized, but all available via Vapormatic

Don't be put of by loose or rattling drawer-bar. Bushes pins and hooks easy to replace

Also don't be put off if hydraulics don't work at tick over engine revs. The alternator needs to kick out 13.5 volts to make them work properly

Check that the 3 point linkage lower points are ok and no error codes come up that they are faulty. These are expensive to replace. But once done should last the rest of the tractor's lifetime.

Make sure the door hinges are not cracked. Easy to fix if they are. Don't try to grind off the weld on the hinges. Take off the inside panels and undo them from the inside - welds are supposed to be there.

Looks a nice tractor, will sound good and pull like crazy from that 7.5 litre turbo Powerstar engine.
