Ford Ranger 3.2 engine rattle when cold

Funny you say that, I think ours has always been faulty as it has always been bad to start on a cold morning even when it was a few months old. Sent it back to Ford and they said nothing wrong - our local ford dealer is crap, which is a shame because it puts me off having another one even though I think it is the best truck by a long way.

Why use a main dealer ?

They send awkward to diagnose faults to somewhere like

Only used them when it was under warranty, don’t use them now and didn’t to sort this problem out

Hey @Benr
Did replacing the glow plugs solve your problem? I currently have the same noise when cold, my mechanic has advised to get the injectors tested. He does not think it could be the glow plugs. Mine is the 2,2 though the noise is exactly the same.

The 2.2 Euro 5 Puma engine is the biggest heap of stroke going.

I wonder what the 2.0l unit will be like for reliability.
I would also be interested to know about the 2l bi turbo model ? Have a 3.2 wild Trac and love the engine . Drove the 2l last week and it can still fairly shift 🤷🏻‍♂️

My old boss bought one right when they came on in Wild Track guise. Put 1300km on it and the injectors all had to be replaced due to no start issues. He's been pretty happy since then through.

Our 66 plate ranger seems to be rattling more and more when you accelerate from low revs for about the first 10 minutes.
I recorded it this afternoon on the link below, you can just hear it.

Always give it a bit of time to warm and go gently until warm but it seems to be getting worse. Any ideas what it could be? Expensive?
I had a vauxhall Astra (many years ago), with hydraulic tappet adjusters, and with them, I think the hole that let the oil in was getting blocked with build up, I used to put a drop of engine flush in before changing the oil. Not sure if you have them on your engine, and I believe there are problems with the oil pumps, so not sure that would be a good idea.

The 2.0 bi-turbo is a very impressive engine in terms of improved refinement and performance. It has a very patchy reliability record though with many injector failures and fuel contamination of the sump oil causing the wet belt to fail. Hopefully they will have sorted the issue by now and there has been a recall early on to replace injectors.

Have a 2012 ranger 2.2 here that we recently had the daunting experience of seeing the oil pressure light become illuminated whilst driving... Just happened near home so promptly stopped and turned off. Drained oil and removed sump to find oil pump shot... Fitted new oil pump and started up to the sound of a screeching turbo.. First thing to cop it I guess.. Fitted new turbo cartridge and away she went no bother.. I guess we had a very lucky escape.

Quick search on google revels this is a fairly common problem so I'd suggest to anyone with a similar age vehicle that's not had a oil pump change to seriously consider it. There's a few things to remove and sumps a bit fiddly to get off but not bad really and far cheaper than a new engine !

Yes I think 3 out of the 5 had failed but replaced the lot. Apparently on a modern engine the glow plugs will come on and off for a while after start up to even up the engine. Made a huge difference after they were done, the Knocking had gone but was still a bit uneven. Spent sometime on google and the consensus was that a remap makes a big difference to the 3.2. So had it done and it is like a different vehicle so smooth and the power delivery is noticeably better.
Interestingly it was only 178hp before the remap and 215 after with 550nm torque. Has got real grunt now.
Normally would have changed it by now, but don’t want to let it go.

Thanks kindly. It's a cheap enough fix, will def try it.

And yes, the 3.2 pulls like a steam train after a remap. Torque for days. We've dyno'd them at 500nm on the wheels with basic mods, exhaust, cooler, remap.

Mine has got a fault code for glow plug 2 and is very rough and lumpy until it gets up to temp so I'll probably end up replacing all 5 glow plugs but I'm also considering getting it remapped. Can I ask who you went with for the remap because it sounds like you are very happy with the results?
