What does the performance monitor do?

I just assumed it was the same thing as fitted to later Fords to measure ground speed/ area covered etc.
Could be wrong though...:)
I do believe that type of performance monitor was fitted to very late bubble cab TWs as a first step. before being integrated into the dash properly as on the superQ versions.

Great things them old TWs, Lots of reek, lots of enthusiastic arm twirling and gearstick stirring at rows end getting them turned round.
