Fordson Major oil bath air filter

Hi I have got a 1954 Fordson E1A Major - I think the oil bath air filter is the original and its in quite a state - looks as though a mouse has nested in it at some point. The new replacements don't seem to fit, not sure if this is because parts are generally stocked for the later Power & Super Powers which maybe have slightly different sizing. Anyway, as I can't find a replacement I was trying to get the mesh old filter out to clean or just replace that part but it seems to be an odd fitting. See pics. The replacement filters marketed now just push into the assembly but this one, is in a small assembly which fits over the centre pipe and the edge of the main oil bath assembly. Before I damage it just wondered if anyone had seen the same thing.

Many thanks

Looks exactly like a Ferguson TEF filter (the upper half) I just soak them in petrol then remove and set fire to them, that's all they ever did in the good old days! Fresh oil and off you go

Thanks for the advice. I will try to get the mesh out, which was proving quite difficult yesterday, but if that fails I'll soak the bottom of the assembly in petrol and let it dry out. I think the filter is designed to be removed, but looks like its been 50 years since anyone has looked at it and I will almost certainly damage it forcing it off. Thanks again.

Take the mesh out, remove any rubber seals and put it in a bucket in the middle of the yard well away from any combustibles, dowse with petrol and light at arms length taking any further precautions you feel necessary -

Do not light at arms length unless you want a ride in air ambulance to specialist burns unit

All the ones i have done have mesh like wire that is used to make springs, i remember doing a Ransomes combine 1001 and burnt out cleaner after that wire could be pulled out no good, old Ford 4000 i look after now has plenty of straw but it only gets blown out as best
as possible.
