Fordson Major Overheating

Evening all.

A friend of mine has a 19565 diesel Major for a bit of fun. Out of the blue it got hot recently on a fairly cool day. He found that the bottom hose was stone cold but top hose hot. The Rad flushes through and he has flushed the block through from the bottom hose. Everything seems to run clear. Water pump has been off to check the impeller. He changed the thermostat for a new one, without improvement. He has tested the thermostats in the wife's saucepan (shh) and they open at the indicated points. Oddly one is rated at 73'c and one at 82'c (if i remember correctly what he told me). That seemed odd in it's self. He has tried running without a thermostat and the bottom hose seemed to warm a little.
The rad does not seem to pressurise initially so think it is not head related, no oil/ coolant mix.

Its not pumping, recheck the pump.. pulley slipping?

Not belt slipping and pump seems OK. Can a pump look OK and be knackered? The impeller seemed tight on the shaft.

First is it losing coolant, the rad will be cool at bottom unless engine is run for a long time or working hard, if it's losing coolant run with no rad cap and check for bubbles, thermostat has possibly been superseded by higher temp opening one from a later more modern tractor with a heater...

He has run it without thermostats and its still not circulating, the rad is ok so that just leaves it not pumping for some reason.

Update: Friend has given everything a good flushing through. Put the lower value thermostat in and it seems to be OK. I now wonder if overfilling may have caused some of the initial blow out. Fingers crossed and thank you all for the input.
