Fordson Super Major oil leak

A friend of mine has recently bought a Fordson Super Major (1961) and it is leaking oil which is coming from the hole in the bottom engine casing just below the flywheel. Can anyone shed light on where this oil leak maybe coming from. My first thought was seal behind flywheel. He has just bought the tractor and drove it to mine to show it off when we noticed the leak. It was sitting for the last two days since it has been delivered and no leak only when he has driven it does it leak. I do not know much about Fordson's so do not really know the layout between the engine, flywheel and transmission. the oil looked like engine oil not transmission oil.

Thanks for the reply, OK so my first thought maybe correct. The tractor has been stood for a while so could the seal have dried out and with a bit of use function again, me being a bit optimistic as my friend has just shelled out for this tractor from a dealer and getting someone to split the tractor would not be what he wants to hear.

The dealer will have written 'sold as seen' on the invoice, as no one in their right mind would lay themself open to a claim on a machine with 61 years of unknown history.

Yes I do agree with you, that is why I said that my friend will not be pleased to fork out additional monies at getting someone else to remedy the issue. Also the dealer is not very local. If the tractor has to be split I will advise my friend to do the clutch plate, anything else that should be looked at and renewed in that area when split?

I unexpectedly stopped oil leaking from rear crank seal on my dexta when I put Fuchs HDX30 in engine instead of multigrade there were other little leaks around engine which also stopped

Father-in-Law had the solution on his Major ....... Open-top Bakes Bean tin can suspended under the offending flywheel drain hole by two bits of wire, like a Child's Swing. At the time (as an aspiring Agricultural Engineer) I felt unable to comment ...... But looking back it was definitely one type of solution
