Fordson super major PTO

Hi,

We have a 1961 Fordson super major that is extremely hard to engage PTO. With clutch down full sometimes you can force it into PTO or if you switch off the tractor you can engage PTO. Clutching to go through gears works perfectly and PTO works fine when you can get it engaged.

Is this a clutch issue?

When you press the clutch to the very bottom with the PTO in gear does PTO stop or still drag on? if it drags on, it will be the clutch problem.

From memory it doesnt stop but must try it again. Was thinking that it would be a clutch problem. She will have to be spilt i think

How much free play do you on the clutch pedal if you have more 2" at the top then adjust it to 2 or a little less

How do you adjust the clutch? Do you still have to spilt the tractor for this?

You adjust the rod to give you about 2" free play at the top of pedal

I think you’d get away with less than 2”

yes so long there is some free play

Slacken the loock nut then take the top pin out of the clevis and adjust to suite length

We made the adjustments as suggust and its made a big difference. Still a bit of a crunch when putting it into PTO but never the less it is working. I am ammusing that is the only adjustment you can make unless we spilt the tractor?

Make sure you have pedal return spring on as that take the play out of the joint by doing that you can go tighten on the free play
