fork lift test 5 days !

Initially was told I'd need a 5 day course/test, now as I'm experienced (40 years of driving alsorts of equipment)
It's been reduced to 2 days , more bureaucratic tick boxing bs , it seems a ticket for a larger forklift isn't acceptable for a little 3 wheel electric job.
How long before some genius decides we need a ticket to drive a tractor . Be fun taking a test for every different Implement on the back.
Where will all this end , it gets worse every year. More tickets, more hoops.
Outfit down road wanted a man cage for forklift thought it would be safer than using a ladder, But on investigation they found forklift would need a check every 6 months, driver needs extra ticket , with all the extra hoops and expense they decided not to bother , carry on with ladder.
But it seems you can hire a cherry picker without having a ticket ??? We really are funked.

Who’s asking you for these tickets? Ie who’s the ‘they’?

Training providers really have got good at up selling and why wouldn’t they as some may find the 5 day course beneficial and some believe that this is the correct course to be fully competent in forklift operation.

Ive said this phrase to a number of ppl recently when asked for advise about training.. “If you are going to the course just to tick a box you are wasting everybody’s time including your own”

You don't need a statutory license for any of the equipment you mentioned. However if employed or you employ you must have adequate sufficient training on any machine or appliance, the regulation is called the provision and use of working equipment regulations or PUWER. It doesn't have to be official but most employers get a provider to carry out the training to protect themselves and ensure their employees are correctly trained. simple items can be done with familiarisation training but complex equipment a course may be required. IPAF or an equivalent body cover MEWPS or cherry pickers, although not required by law you would not be allowed on any professionally run site in the UK without one. There are many fatal accidents in the UK where workers unfamiliar with equipment kill themselves or others.

At the risk of getting lynched....In every other industry you need training to drive different machines. Why should ag be any different? Just a question.
You can hire a 50t excavator and it’ll be dropped in your yard no questions asked about training or competency.

All the hire company is interested in is whether you can insure their property. If it’s insured, you can hire pretty much anything. You can buy the relevant 2/3/4 weekly/monthly insurance online with a credit card.

Training and certification is up to individual businesses, same with how the implementation of that is handled. I’m sure there’ll be plenty operations under the radar, and as long as nothing goes wrong they’ll get away with it. That goes for agriculture and non agricultural.

It's a 2 day course for the rough terrain ticket, but the instructor might be persuaded to do it as a one day refresher if the candidate has extensive prior experience. I know 2 lads that did it at 17 and 16 as a one day course...

We're no different. But most of us have been driving loaders since we were nippers, and as long as loaders have been around. There weren't any courses when the Sambron J14t first came out, and it was the norm to load lorries as a 14 year old and drift the back end around with the tyres off the ground. We were more concerned about being killed by the Kawasaki KLT 3 wheeler back then, that thing was a death trap.

Book and independent forklift trainer and you an get yourself assessed and passed in a fraction of the time the "industry" recognized schemes will take , downside is it is only really acceptable for your organisation /Farm .
you could get 2 or 3 people together and do this for small group I guess that would save on cost . The trainer will issues a certificate of training /competence in forklift operation but it would not be for RTITB for example.

I think if you have failed to injure others or yourself in thirty years then give me the 50 year old with no ticket any day over the hi viz clipboard carrying trainers ability’.
Trouble is not that many fail……. See anything that stands out here…….. and most killed are over 60……. But yes making sure people are lucky rather than well trained is the answer 😞

Which course requires that? I've done two telehandler training schemes and neither required me to do that?
Having never done a forklift test but having around 35 years experience driving them what is all this handbrake on handbrake off business all about.

sounds a bit like the Karate kid with polish on polish off…….

To pass the test do you have to break some planks of wood with the back of your hand or sumat like that?

I would have to agree in my experience its mostly older folks that are affected due to normalisation of behaviour when things that are wrong but because of many years of no consequence become normal behaviour until it catches up with the unfortunate. Although I have seen some youngsters unfortunately loose their lives in 2021, all unavoidable.
