Fox trapping

Hi All ,

Its a bit late in the day, but just 3rd visit by a fox in just over a week and now have no hens left.

Fox shooting chap came last weekend and shot 4 foxes in three visits. There is a townee moved to the next door property, who works at a local Vets, who brings home ex treatment foxes, puts them in a big cage, and then releases them (allegedly). This illegal, but proving it is neigh impossible

Been here 40 years, and only ever had the occasional fox about.

My enquiry is :-- does anyone have experience of a successful cage trap, I could bait it and then shoot the foxes myself.

Hope to hear of some helpful advice.

I bought a cage trap for £80 off ebay. They stand on a plate and the door springs shut.
They are very nervous around it and try to pull the bait through the holes. Also dig underneath it.
I caught one after a week but it opened the back of the cage (badly built by me) and escaped. It never returned.
Don't think I'll bother again.

Had 3 cubs coming juring the day taking hens, had all 3 in 2 days in the cage trap, it's working 24/7, there's more being released here from towns than ever before. Most in one night is 11, 2 had been shaved and repaired. A certain charity has been seen releasing them🤬🤬

A lamper not far from here got 5 (I think) in one night that had been castrated so obviously urban ones that had been released. Also found 2 that had already presumably met the native foxes with a predictable outcome.

Never checked the rubbish, will do next time.
I rang um day after, first they denied it but when I'd told um I'd shot all the last lot in one night and they where seen and videoed releasing them and the next lot meet the same fate the, it went quiet after that.

Edit...a didn't write rubbish....bollo$ks 🤣 🤣

Hi Tullah, Would you explain a little please just what you mean, and have you had success with such a set-up?

I view of the fragile nature of some traps, I am also thinking of getting some hefty weldmesh and welding up a sizeable cage if I could be sure of a foolproof door.

Although 'hard release' is clearly illegal (releasing elsewhere than where captured) although seemingly commonly practiced, are there any instances where the law has been enforced ?

A pack of drag hounds caught a fox " by mistake" near here and the fox had tattoo numbers in his ear

Before tb was a problem,an old eccentric farmer in our valley was trapping badgers and putting metal Ketchum tags in their ears. He caught dozens of them but never one he'd tagged before.

I had a friend with all the gear come in after 4 or 5 hens were taken. Each time foxy burrowed in under the fence. My man has full cammo, thermal imagining binoculars, electronic calls, and a thermal imagine telescopic sight costing several thousand pounds. It has been highly effective.

First night, we could clearly see the fox walking up the field. One blast from my friend's electronic fox caller and the fox disappeared PDQ. Every subsequent night we could see him in the thermal imaging and how effective the selection of the electronic calls was in pissing him off.

This has proved the best and a most humane way of deterring foxes. Foxy has far more sense than to come within range and just loiters around out of gunshot poking two fingers up whenever he thinks he has an audience. I have a trail cam up and he hasn't been near the hens again. Job done!

You can get double entry traps now think there better because you can open them up both ends and put them somewhere like a footbridge or a run and get them used to running through there before you set it and they fill less trapped in when the go to get the bait with both ends open.

The fox shooting chap who comes here, and many other farms in the locality, is fully equipped like Dry Rot's friend, costing many thousands of £s. Its amazing the view you get through thermal imaging equipment. He uses the electronic fox call device to lure foxes out from cover.

He also makes his own ammunition, says the powder charge/trajectory is more consistent. it certainly blows a large hole on exit!

The normal level district fox population I can accept and has never been much of a problem at lambing or any other time, but the current explosion of release foxes is a different situation altogether. This has to be stopped. If they think the farming community will just accept it they must be more witless than you imagine. Releasing foxes which will certainly be shot, trapped or untrapped, is inhumane and certainly not in the foxes best interest.

My rim-fire 22 is inadequate for field foxing, OK for a head shot in a cage, so hence my search for a 100% successful trap.
